Selfmade Coldair Intake System And Rear Battery

yesterday i started my new project.

first of all i moved the battery in the rear of the car.

(thanks to many carhifi power parts)

 

then i moved the ecu in the original container and mounted the power steering accordingly.

 

today i built a custom coldair intake out of the stock components.

 

the engine lost a really small amount of newtonmeters at low rpms but gained about 5-10bhp at higher revs, really noticable at 5k rpm and up... i was surprised how well it goes now.

 

i'll finish everything, including a battery box and a inlet at the front bumper, next weekend.

the lump of wood in the boot isnt helping you in terms of speed and handling. i think you should look at redesigning the feed for your airfilter. dirt/water/spray etc is going right up there!

 

other than that, its good to see you have the initiative to take on small issues that are part and parcel of a 205!

the battery is getting a nice place under the wood, i'll cut some of the bottom out and put a selfmade steelbox in. then the battery sits aproximately at the height of the wheels, a bit behind the rear axle. this is only a temporal solution until i finished the box and respray everything under the car (needs de-rusting). i'll also put something in the front-bumper to force induction of cold air, the 90° part to the air filter will get some small holes to let the water leave this parts before reaching the filter.

 

the tuner gutmann has done this for peugeot 206 in germany manytimes with good results.

 

personally the greatest reason to do all this is for more space in the engine bay. after converting to a wastedspark-engine the pipes for the air were squished and so less air flew trough. and of course, shorter intake is better for higher rpms.

 

i'll megasquirt the whole car in some weeks, after buying a wideband and get some time for doing all this. hopefully it was worth the work.

 

and yep, this thread is serious ;-)

anyhow i spent 2 days for all this, and i think forced induction is better than any k&n-"shroom"

i don't think this quite qualifys as "forced induction" try googleing it :angry:

At least you are trying something different, to be honest apart from maybe 25% of conversions that are done especially well, and the other maybe 25% that are totally different to anything else, the remaining 50% don't really excite me very much.

 

As a constructive critiscm, that convoluted tubing from your airbox to your throttle body is known not to flow air well (disrupts flow due to convolutions) so if possible I would see if you can change it to a smooth bore pipe.

my goal is to keep it as stock as possible because otherwise i have to discuss it with our "tüv" in 2 years.

in my oppinion the k&n open-filter kits are not the best you can do, but they are loud, maybe thats why younger boys love them. :-D

 

i'll try to change that pipe, but at the moment it was the best i had because it is really flexible, the engine can move around without giving forces to the filterhousing.

 

tomorrow i'll do the intake in the front bumper. hope this will be as good as the rest. :angry:

 

btw: i saw many airboxes, and this seems not worse than a buyed one, when the intake is matched properly.

 

the holes in the airbox are even bigger than the throttle, so i dont think i'll get power loss there.

 

i mentioned it here mainly as a hint for others, especially 2.0 16v conversions, because the 205 bay is really small compared to f.e. the 306 or 405.

 

i think it would also be possible to use older motronic systems with airflow metres, when you put the afm at the downpipe (before the filter) they should work also and perhaps work even better with sharp camshafts. (more space between -> more damping of rude idle-airflow) but thats something others can check.

good work, the battery looks well bolted down.

 

The cold air intake is also a good idea we need to see more of this on our forum.

 

You might want to look at this article to help position the air inlet better. as that inlet may pick up dust and water because of it's position.

Your work were definitely a good start, sooner or later you will have more idea and experience to design your own parts.

 

I have been at your stage too, my first induction kit was about the same instead the cood air was drawn infront of the radiator under the bumper.

 

Belows are some of my previous and current home brew.

i will put the battery in a steelbox unter the rear bottom. the lower (vertical position, not amount) the weight, the better the handling. also i'll have more space as this car is the car i use for buying my food and stuff :lol:

the terminal is either from a bmw e36 or bmw mini.

 

iirc, someone here did dig a hole and weld a box beside the rear right wheel. it is deep enough to keep the battery top level with the floor plan, very tidy, try a search.

 

the intake, after trying so many different ways to route the cold air, from underneath driving lamp, beside fans, inside wheel arch..... the current one is not my ideal, but no more budget on it and I don't think any further mod without remap will be significant anyway.

 

you have don't a good job, well try, keep it up.

i used a bmw dist block for the front of the car and also the bmw power cable as it was nice and thick and mounted it on the suspension turret.
