Problems Fitting Walbro Intank Pump

Recommended Posts

MerlinGTI

This is the pump i recently purchaced:

http://rallynuts.com/motorsport/Rally_Car_...05_GTi_2415.asp

Problem is its too small in width to fit propley in the orginal housing + the outlet on the pump is centered on the orginal but offset on the walbro. This means it will not line up with the housings barb. They did supply a short length of pipe, but that also wont fit the housings barb

So to round up, it doesnt fit the housing and the outlet barb is in the wrong position.

Am I missing something here or is this pump bloody useless for 205's? Car in question is a 1988 1.6.

A picture says a thousand words:

th_SDC10612.jpg

Little and large

th_SDC10615.jpg

Tight as....

th_SDC10613.jpg

Baggy as a pro's privates

Cheers

possibly for a P2 pump housing? never taken one of those apart, only a P1/1.5.

but from all the aftermarket pumps about they all have a different outlet on the top to the original pump and come with that short bit of pipe.

I have been eyeing these pumps on ebay with a little bit of scepticism.. they look like good value , high power pump for less than std pump money ... too good to be true , maybe. I'm sure with a little fettling it could be modified BUT it should not be sold as a direct replacement for std!

Almost twice the price of a standard pump from GSF.

Im not bodging it up so it 'works', its sold as a 205 gti pump, for my year and my model.

Thankyou for the replies gents. :D

Maxi and myself have had a look at one for his car, and came to the same conclusion, they arent standard fitment. They are marked as being direct replacement for the early style pump, but fit neither the early or later pumps/tanks.

how different is the later pump?

Alot different where it goes into the tank, the hole for it to suck fuel into the pump is alot smaller, and the in-tank baffling is all different. If Maxi gets on here im sure he will explain better, having studied the two better. But the long and the short of it is the P2 pump doesnt seem to flow as much as the earlier one.

When I looked at it I assumed the pump went in slightly offset and you just "pack" round the pump body, with some rubber slivers, so it's held in place in the pump housing?

You could make it fit im sure, but then again i could pick a fuel pump from pretty much any car on the market and 'make' it work. The point is it was sold to me as being specifically for the 205 GTI, my model and year. The 'fitting kit' that came with it has nothing to ensure it correctly fits the housing and the blurb on rally nuts says nothing about modifactions being necessary. If it did I wouldnt of bought it in the first place :D

I dunno whats going on, if its a Phase2 pump or what. I do know it doesnt fit and RallyNuts are investigating the matter with FSE at the moment.

I will keep you all updated :D

I dont think they even do one for the phase 2 cars. Thats pretty much what we had decided too, its being mis-sold slightly as it doesnt directly fit at all, and they dont supply bits to make it fit correctly.

its quite a strange on the Phase 2 pump/tank, as there is no difference in the pictures or part numbers at all on servicebox between that and the Phase 1, so you can't even buy the right one from peugeot if you didnt care about the price :D

Theres a big difference when you get tme on the bench, the earlier tank has a big perforated baffle which fits around the pump and stops fuel sloshing away from the pickup. Where the later pump has this combined into its design, although the hole to get the fuel into the housing is a bit on the small size.

Peugeot probably just combining part numbers as usual. They arent interchangeable without modification though, as the electrical plugs are even different!

The walbro pump is just a std pump they supply to fit many in tank carriers, not just 205gtis. The kit they come with is to make them fit.

The differences have been summed up by Dan really. Earlier pumps use a seperate, external baffle - which arent avaliable from pug anymore - and have a larger intake filter on the bottom of the cannister. Later pumps dont have the seperate cylindrical baffle, just rely on the s*ite cannister which I think is a major blame for fuel surge in the later cars.

Long and the tall of it, best std setup is the earlier pump with the seperate baffle. Walbros are a good idea but will need a bit of fiddling to fit. Just to add- my car runs an early pump and made 241BHP, fuelling isnt a problem at all.
