Occasional Scraping Noise From Rear

Recommended Posts

stimpysaurus

I finally got the car back on the road after it sitting for the last 6 weeks and now it seems to have developed a really loud scraping noise. Its coming from the rear and i think it must be something to do with the wheels as it sounds like a rotating sort of shearing metal which changes as i speed up or brake.

I'm pretty sure theres a warped disc or something cos the brake pedal pulsates when i press on it, so I'm planing on changing the discs and pads on the rear anyway.

Im also wondering if it might be my handbrake sticking or something like that because the rear pads have been changed twice in the past year and theres always been a slight scraping noise from the back but nothing like this. 2 different garages changed the pads and neither mentioned anything other than the pads being worn.

does this sound like a symptom of a warped disc or something else?

If I'm going to have to have a look then I'd like to order the parts before, can you tell which brakes the car has with the wheels on? or is there a definite type for each model? (mines a 1.9 H reg '90/'91)

anybody got any ideas about this noise or which parts i need to order?

cheers

Lianne

I don't think it will be your discs i think it may be the rear wheel bearing in an advanced state of messy.

I think it's a new hub job for the 1.9.

could be worn out rear pads, or no rear pads

whatever it is you need to jack the back up and have a poke about.

im sure it will be fine! :D

please no hissing in disgust but I've never actually taken the wheel off the car (or any car infact) how do I know what everything is supposd to look like? Im guessing if somethings really wrong it will look different to the other wheels.

If I do get confused (very easily done!) I could post some pictures up on here?

are there any basic checks that an idiot can perform?

I do have haynes but I find that its a pain in the arse

can anyone supply me with the part numbers which might need and from a cheap site?

I had a look on gsf but theres lots of different parts which sound like the same thing.

yep, pictures will help!

start by jacking the back up and supporting the car on axle stands, safety first!

take the handbrake off, turn the wheel and see if there's any noises, then grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock positions, and try and rock it, then at 3 and 9.

you'll see if there's any roughness or play in the bearing by doing that.

if you find nothing then, take the wheel off and inspect the pads and disc, look for enough material on the pads, and any scratching marks on the disc, it "should" be evenly worn.

good luck :D

Cheers Welshpug! :(

just one more question. can I jack the car up on gravel or does it have to be solid ground? my drive and the pub carpark are covered in gravelly stone stuff and the only road is the A697 and i think i might just die if i try to do it there!

.....there is this road in the new housing estate but the Latvians live there! One doesnt have a finger and another looks like elvis.....however the other 20 that live in the house are ok :D

I will probably take photos anyway cos Im sad and bore my friends on facebook with all my car talk (its a good way to get time to yourself) so that wouldnt be a problem, infact il probably spend more time doing that than actually fixing anything!

You are as mad as a hatter, BTW.

Have you got an old peice of board you can jack up on or an old paving flag? It'd be better to jack the car on something a bit more solid than gravel because you'll be pulling the wheel about once its up.

Or get Elvis to do it for you, uh-huh.
