Exhaust Time. Will This Make Me A Chav?

Recommended Posts

Rupertfinch

After replacing the rear beam, the old exhaust took a bit of a bettering and is now blowing out in a rather audible, but pleasing style.

I'm looking to replace it.

So, do I stick with another Bosal system (with which I'm happy), or do I go with a new bosal centre section fitted with an Ashley backbox? I do not want an overly boomy chav chariot noise. I recently had a spin in a Clio Williams and the backbox fitted actually caused me pain. But just a wee bit of a throaty roar can't hurt, can it?

There's the potential of a few pounds off RRP on both makes.

Any opinions greatfully received.

I like more of a deep, basey sound coming out of my exhaust.

I had a straight pipe with the bafflers taken out, too loud and never again.

If you're keeping the centre silencer that should (hopefully) eliminate most of the boom associated with straight-through exhausts and it should actually sound quite nice. Nice rasp and not too boomy.

Ashley exhausts are well known in Ford circles as being cheap, noisy and need modification to fit.

The same Ford owners think their cars handle well. Does this therefore not worry the hell out of you?

Sorry, but your talking rubbish there mate. Ive a 3" Ashley on my sierra and its neither cheap or noisy. Fitted straight on too!

I assume you are fitting this to an Mi 205? If so, I have the standard Bosal front section (including first silencer) and a stainless steel back box, I can't remember the make (maybe i'll climb under later).

The system is quite loud really, but the noises are very nice, very deep and throaty on idle, burbles further up and raspy at the top, and pops changing gear right on limiter. It's just the sheer numbr of decibles that are too much in my opinion. The centre silencer really doesn't do much, it is tiny after all.

If it's not an Mi 205 then ignore me!

Ashley exhausts are primarily made for the rally boys, who want something cheap and sturdy. They are usually quite loud from my experience.

Well, John (supersub14) has kindly provided me with an Ashley centre section and backbox for a very reasonable price. It's in great nick and has the centre silencer bit, so shouldn't be in the ridiculously boomy category.

I shall update with my opinions on the system when it's fitted (to a pretty standard 1.6 - sadly not an Mi), hopefully in the next week or so.

Thanks for your opinions folks, greatly appreciated.

I must say that I'm happy with the ashley box. I bought both sections from John (supersub14), but only put on the back box section as the remainder of my bosal exhaust is actually in good nick. Nice noise and not too boomy.

Although this is only based on a quick 3 mile blast back from the mechanics. Even thought I could hear a little bit of popping when I came off the throttle! The hot weather is clearly playing tricks on my mind.
