No Slow Speed On Cooling Fan

Recommended Posts

supersub14

Hi, decided to get my cooling fans working properly tonight there. They were previously wired to a switch on the dash.

Done a pile of searches on the forum and got all the info i needed to fix the fans but ive hit a problem. The slow speed wont work??

Ive put a new thermoswitch in as the old one was bust (the reason the switch was wired in on the first place i presume!), and ive tested the resistor on my other gti so both are working fine. Ive linked the pins on the plug to test (ie centre pin to outside pin) and the fast speed works 100% as it should. But the problem is with the slow speed. When i link out the other pins in the plug i get nothing. Theres no voltage getting to the fan to run it (i tested with a voltmeter at the 2-pin fan plug).

Have i missed something? Any ideas what is wrong?

The wire must be broke down somewhere????

Seems you have checked everythin else.

thats what i thought but im sure there all ok. None seem to be broken and i was wondering if there was anything else i should try before i start to cut wires.

Bloody electrics...

just a thought - is there a simple way to test the wires to see what one is broke?

Do i just use the bell test function on the multimeter and connect to each end of the wire?

yep thats how you'd test it :)

It will be a dead resistor most likely; if you don't want to replace it just bridge the two thick wires and dispose of the thin wires.

you see i thought that as well, so i removed the resistor and put it into my other car. I then linked out the middle and outside pins on the plug and the slow speed worked fine on it. So to me the resistor was ok.

Ill have to check it again this weekend when i get a chance. At least my fast speed is working properly

why dont you bridge the connector for the resistor then test the low speed circuit again. it will go at full speed but there will only be wires between the test block and the fan.

that way you will know if its the wiring or not.

if the fan dont come on id check if youre getting volts down at the resistor connector(a nice easy place to check, and about half the wiring to rule out.lol.)

Have you fixed it yet? I had a similar problem on a car I bought that had been off the road for a year and half stripped, high speed worked OK but no slow speed, fault was really dirty/corroded resitor plug connections, make sure the connections are clean, just pulling the plug out and putting it back in did not work, I had to disassemble the plug and use some fine emery paper on the contact areas of the terminals. got it fixed on saturday there!

It was a bad connection on the plug to the thermoswitch. All working as it should now :D

Cheers for the help guys
