Um, How Do U Switch The Engine Off Without A Key?

Recommended Posts

Background:

I've replaced my faulty fuseboard with a known working one. The thing is, now the car won't start. The original tachymetric relay was faulty. My mechanic has bypassed my tachymetric relay and i could hear the fuel pump kick in when the car was switched on. I got my hands on a used relay, but when he connected it and removed the bypass, the car wouldn't switch off. So it was back to the bypass.

Well, now that I've replaced my fuseboard, I'm no longer hearing the fuel pump when the car is switched on, and the car won't start.

I'm tempted to give the tachymetric relay another go, but I'm afraid that once I get the car started, I won't be able to switch it off.

So...how do u switch it off, if the key doesn't work?

put your hand over the inlet and it will soon stall.

Unplug the AFM will cut engine without giving you a shock. Unsure if it might ever cause damage, but it's the way I used before.

Wire 76 from the tach relay goes to the fuel pump, put a switch or connection box in-line so you can cut fuel whenever needed.

unplugging the AFM wont make it stall! As we found out in Croatia, after been flagged down by a Polish couple with "engine troubles". re connected the AFM to the loom, and restored full power! The car ran like a bag of s*it, using 3-5times the regular amount of fuel he said! (1 tank got him 90 miles! he had to drive a good 200km to us as well)

But if i get it to stall, then disconnect the battery, won't I be good to go?

Matt, can't put a switch on wire 76 as there's no tachy in at the moment, not even sure if the wiring will work, as the mechanic has a workaround in place. Just want to have a backup plan in case everything works too well.

I'll decide after some sleep if I'm adventurous enough to try it in the morning. Had planned to give it a go this afternoon but things didn't work out that way.

Cheers

Yeah but there must be a wire going to the fuel pump, this wire (no.n76) will have been connected to the loom to bypass the tach relay so you can still put in a fuel cut off switch to disable the pump if needs be.

Cutting the fuel is not the right way to do it, you have to stop the spark. The tach relay gives power not just to the pump but to the coil as well. To stop the engine unplug the negative terminal of the coil.

No it doesn't, the only wire between the coil & tachy relay is 112 from the negative side of the coil.

Pull fuse #14 fuel pump. it'll stall a few seconds later, once its not turning there will be no spark.

But if the key isn't stopping the engine then you have deeper issues because the key should stop the feed to the coil so something else is wired wrongly imo.

If its just the fuel pump is still running then as I mention above, pull the fuse.

Graham.

had this problem about a month ago where is tarted the car and was jumping with joy, but when i tried turning it off it wouldnt (had given everything a permanent live as opposed to switched). I just pulled out the king lead from the distributor..killed it straight away...

Well, I think I'll try the 5th gear bit....don't want to go near the coil, and neither of my boards carry a fuse 14. And as I said there's no tachy, so cant go that route. Tell me something tho, to run the fuel pump, do I need +AA or +AC...as in, which is switched live and which is permanent live...or are neither of those right?
