Stdt Turbo Problems ?

Hi Folks, I have a 205 stdt , brilliant car but what I`m finding is that when under acceleration it seems fine , but when I get to whatever speed I choose when i come off throttle or "feather" the throttle , the car goes off like a rocket and i find myself having to check the speed .... It happens all over the rev and speed range . Any Ideas anyone?.

Any help will be gratefully recieved .

Also , Is it worth getting the Derv Doc to do a stage 1 tune ?

Ahoy there! I had this on mine just before it decided to sit on my drive for a week and refuse to start. It would rev pretty sharply especcially like you say when you want to slow down or stop, not a good thing! All I can say is check for Air leaks, as thats what I put it down to on mine, it was fine when I changed the overflow pipes and it has never done it since.

 

How much is the Derv Docs Stage 1 tune? What is included for that?

It doesnt rev wildly , just starts to pull like a train , I agree about maybe air / vacuum leaks , I`ll have to have a good look around .

I just wondered if anyone else might have had the same problem and maybe it was a common fault or summat.

The derv doc quotes £120 and a 20/30 bhp increase .. I just want it running properly and to be a bit more responsive thro the rev range , I had one a few few years ago that had been messed with and it was a better drive than the one I have now.

I think he ups the boost a fraction and resets the pump . I`d like to fit an intercooler but it seems like a lot of hassle , unless someone knows different ??

The XUD7 T doesn't really have any common faults apart from pipes and seals perishing, they're pretty much rock solid, saying that, I also had a thing with the fuel filter not being seated quite right and that gave me problems.

 

Thats alot of increase for not a lot of money with the Derv Doctor, I saw his 205 running at York Dragway once, it went like the clappers! Smoked a bit too, mind!

 

 

The intercooler mod has been bandied around on here for quite a while; Dtoru did it on his, hes has a couple of threads somewhere, I know a few have considered it, but are put off by having to swap the lucas pump for a Bosch...I think I also read somewhere that Allard did a conversion keeping the original pump, but I couldn't say for sure.

 

Also i think Wee Jimmy on heres upto something with the wifes car intercooler-wise.

sounds like a fuel metering issue in the fuel pump itself, how one would test that I don't know, you'd need to take the car to a diesel specialist.

 

air leaks and the like cause poor running and hesitations rather than random excessive power :rolleyes:

 

As for what Derv doctor does, you can do yourself in an afternoon.

 

though with a 205 I would look at fitting an intercooler before looking at tuning.

Yes I`d prefer to go the intercooler route to be honest , seems a safer option . I need to find someone who has done it , to save me the hassle of working it out , sounds lazy but i just haven`t got the time to sort it .

It really does pull when it happens , Gawd knows whats going on !

just turn the pump and turbo up, you only need a few tools and some time to fiddle, pretty easy to do yourself.

 

you do need a boost gauge to keep an eye on the boost levels, too much boost = too much heat = loss of power and potential engine damage.

 

when you consider the above, then add an intercooler, you can add more boost :rolleyes:

 

I'd have a go yourself, its a long way from Dolgellau to derby!

 

 

Never tried one, but I have heard that a rover 218 or 418 has an intercooler that will work (same engine) otherwise there is plenty out there you can make fit, just a matter of hunting the scrapyards and seeing what you can get hold of that will fit.

The suirging sounds like what my car did for a while before it stopped dead & it was the supply fuel line rubber hose which runs up from the fuel heater on the back of the block which had perished & was splitting.

 

I removed this & fitted the later style thermostat housing & fuel filter from a 306 DT.

 

I seriously doubt you'd get a 20-30bhp gain from the XUD7T for £120, best you'll get is a simlar power to the 1.9 TD, maybe slightly more.

 

I also think the Derv Doctors figures are based on using the intercooled 306 1.9 DT engine with a bosch pump because its much easier to tweak than the Lucas one your car will have fitted.

 

Simply fitting an intercooler might not give an real gain, in the standard location on the 205 they are fairly compromisesed fitting due to lack of flow through the intercooler, iirc the 405 has a duct type affair built into the under bonnet sound proofing but even with this the airflow through it isn't that good.

 

There is a topic / post on here about this with links to other sites that cover the intercooled 405 DT & how well it performs with some more info on what you need to acheive for the intercooler to work properly & give the expected benefits.

don't bother with intercooler.

 

get yourself 405 td or 306 td, or zx td, rip the engine out , keep your 205 gearbox , get a bonnet scoop or you could go for 406 inlet manifold and get a xantia front intercooler, or chargecooler possibilites endless...

 

 

I wouldn't bother with derv doc until you want more power. As said you can do the stage one by yourself and use those £120 for new engine and you should have some spare cash too.

 

Make sure you get engine with bosch pump not lucas.

Simply swapping for a Bosch pump & injectors on the XUD7T makes a noticable difference.

hey

 

i have also had the same issues you had and it was air geting in @ diesel filter.

( its converted to a 306 set up same as welsh pug) as filters are cheaper and it tydies up the engine bay a bit.

 

im puting a front mount on the gf's (not wife!!!!) car

using a 4wd cosworth cooler

mite look small but its about 4-5" deep.

 

im after a 406 inlet manifold to use then lower the rad and put intercooler behind front grill.

ull have to do somthing with the vacume pump as it bolts onto the 205 inlet.

i am using a 306 td engine (1.9) so it runs the vacume pump on the end of the cam. you can change the 205 set up over to a 306 using 306 cam and pump. and remove the blanking screw for oil.

but then that buggers you for power steering. im using a saxo eletric pump to get round this.

you mite be easyer just sticking to the 205 set up and making a braket for the vacume pump.

 

also my stdt ran 20psi totaly stock. on a lucas and a kkk turbo and was good.

 

hers is converted to bosh thoe and is WAY!!!! beter. so much smoother and nicer to drive.

 

as said a stage 1 is easy diy,

 

id recomend get a bosh pump on it 1st thoe. about £50 from scrappies. but you need lines and injectors too. extra £20 or in the pocket.

tune that and turn up turbo to 16psi ish see how you get on with that then if your after more go front mount intercooler,

 

theres more you can do to these than youll belive but without the cooler its pointless.
