Rose Jointed Gear Linkages

Recommended Posts

Rob Turbo

I'm planning on making some rose joint gear linkages for my 205 as part of the rebuild, mostly fairly simple, but one small problem, one of the selectors on the gearbox seems to be a solid bar with a ball on top (I'm sure you know the one I mean, the larger of the 2 ball joints on the 'box) so how would you reccoment rose jointing this?

Cut the ball off, drill and tap the bar then put a long bolt in with some nuts on to space it back up to where it should be?

Or is there a better/simpler way of going about it?

Thanks,

Rob

I replaced all of my linkages with home made ones with metal clips instead of plastic cups. Much better, firmer gearshift. Won't melt under the exhaust and won't pop off whith spirited driving

I measured the diameter of the balls at both ends of the rods (the gearbox and L thinky on the subframe) ant I bought rose joints that had the inner ball with the exact same diamensions. Pulled out the balls from the rose-joints and it was a straight ant perfect fit. Put the safety pins back on and got a really nice and firm gear change.

Did this after after the larger of the gear linkages popped out 1 min before the start of the race and had to do the race missing gear shifts as the linkage was held in place with nylon cable ties.

both solutions mentioned are exactly what Miles sells

Miles also sells the rose jointed kit so I would think he's be able to advise how to go about fitting them :P

I have a set of Miles' Grp N linkages off my 306, which are now redundant due to me having the cable shift that came with the v6, so I could use the ball joint cups from them to make some better linkages for the 205, but after a bit of searching of ebay and looking through here at what other's have done, I think I'm going to go for rose joints on all the linkages apart from the awkward one, which I'm going to keep the ball joint, but the double clipped type that Miles' Grp N kits have.

The main reason I'm wanting to go for rose joints is I've got some that I bought ages ago and can't remember what for, so might as well put them to use!

Thanks,

Rob

Just fitted them to mine fella

I just cut the ball off the bar.. welded some threaded bar to the length and fitted the rosey joint

look at my build and you might be able to see it " bit of a dark pic"

works mint

i am still trying to get over to collect those bits but still up to my eye balls

The bits are only small and take up no space really so they can sit here until you're free, unless I get bored and have a drive in your direction!

My only worry about welding a threaded bar to the linkage is the heat damaging the oil seal.

Did you use 6mm rose joints? Would 6mm be ok for all the joints or should the larger ball joints (one in the bay and the one that goes from the lever to the L bracket) be 8mm?

Personally id have thought about cutting the ball off and running a thread down the inside of the stick. Some top hats machined up and a nice shanked bolt would make it sit nicely.

yeah i used 6 mm roseys

They were on our rally cross 106 and did quite a few seasons before i realocated thier use

as for the seal i draped a wet cloth around the shaft to quench some heat

i still have the short one to swap.... but i still got a few jobs to do before that

like the 106gti i need to turbo....

If the engine and box are out then it's easy to mod the arms to take the rose joint's, If it's in the engine bay then good luck as it's a Pain in the ****

Everything is out of the car at the minute, it's a bare shell being prepped for paint, so, how would you reccomend doing the awkward one? drill and tap or weld?

Has anybody got any pictures of these linkages fitted on the car, I would be really interested to see how it all goes. I'm keen to do this on my track car as the linkages are terrible.

I have a Be1 box, which is a little easier, but as others have said I'd cut the ball off and weld some threaded rod or a bolt on there.

Use M8 joints, mine were £3 each off ebay, so £18 for the 6.

The long rod from the gear lever, i have two variants, because I lost the first one on the move from 309 to 205! Both use the std bar, on one I cut the ends off and welded some M8 nuts in and fitted M8 male joints, on the other one I welded M8 threaded bar in. I wouldn't use a M8 threaded bar all the way down, it would probably buckle in those 'red mist' moments!

I didn't bother doing the one that drops onto the capitive ball on the subframe, tho you can. The other two are female M8 rose joints and M87 threaded bar (all std RH thread)

See pics. I also extended the length of my gear lever to give some additonal linkage holes to play with, brass bushed L linkage, which is cut down also

in this one the lever pivot has been welded to stiffen it, you'd be surprised how much this moves when clamped up in the vice

Mine has done 10k miles now, no issues, I did cover the lower ones in bicycle inner tube, filled with spray grease and tie wrapped the ends tight

That lockwire needs attention.

How long you those rose joints on the car then? Only used for eventing?

what's wrong with the lockwire? it's done 10k miles and still holding and stops things falling out if they come loose, which they haven't anyway

Meant to have tension in it and from what I can see chopped straight after it gone through the whole, meant to put a bit of a twist and turn it over. If its done its job fine its not like its holding the chassis together or anything!

Do you grease the rosejoints up every now and again?
