Fitting A Piper 270 Cam To Standard Head – How Much Shout I Skim By?

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

I am fitting a Piper 270 (P16BP270 I think) cam to a standard 2.0 8v (XU10J2) head.

The Piper catalogue states skim the head 0.28”. Does anyone have any experience where this is the optimum amount to take off with this cam or can I get away with taking more off? The head will be gas flowed and ported also if that is relevant.

If have had a good search on here but I could not find a definitive answer.

Thanks

Jonny

Lots of answers to this one in different threads. I have just fitted an XU10 8v head to one of my 205s. Fitted with webers though. I did a 1.8mm skim. You need to skim about 1.6mm off to get a compression ratio of about 10.5:1 - 11:1. This is since the chamber volume is bigger in the XU10 head than the regular XU9 (because of the bigger bore). I took a bit more off just to raise the compression a bit more. 0.28mm is for a regular XU9 head or something...

Okay, thanks for that.

I have just been thinking, will a Piper cam for a XU9 head fit and work okay with my XU10 head? I am using a standard XU9 cam in it at the moment so I assumed so.

Yeah no problem. Ive fitted a Kent PT27 cam originally bought for a XU9 head.

Yep, The cams' for the XU's are the same so fine.

Anthony runs a 1905 bottom end with a QEP flowed XU10 head and 272 (or similar) cam and it went pretty well, he skimmed it for 10.4:1

If you're keeping the 2L bottom end you'll need to work out how much to skim for it, or ask the engine shop to skim for that compression.

Need a vernier??

Yeah you will need either a vernier or a PeterT advanced cam pulley (i made my own though) when you skim it that much.

I'm having a couple of TUD spun down to fit the XU 8v's makes for a cheap vernier, let me know if you're interested.

Just to quickly point something out..

The Piper catalogue states skim the head 0.28”

Which is roughly 7mm!!

I have just double checked the Piper info, it does state 0.28", although I see that it is wrong.
