Rev Limiter Wiring

Recommended Posts

skinner2k3

I am on my second rev limiter now and the problem I put down to a fault with the first has re-occured.

Obviously these things arent exactly rocket science to wire up. Earth, Switched 12v, Coil -ve.

The rev limiter is inside the car. The earth is connected to the earthing block under the instrument cluster. The 12v switched is connected to the ignition coil toggle. For the coil -ve I have used the wire which before I had carbs was the engine rpm signal wire to the ECU.

Exactly as with my old micro dynamics limiter if I set the rev limit to 6500 rpm I get engine misfires from about 5000 rpm onwards.

Any ideas???

I started to get this on mine after fitting the OMEX with the limit set to 6.5k? Misfire was spot on 5k, before and after its ok.

Mine sits under the bonnet and wired directly to the coil as per the instructions we got with it. I've changed all the obvious like amp, coil etc thinking it was one of those so maybe I have a similar issue? I'll take it for a run as soon as I can to see if these parts fixed it. Maybe a poor earth if not?

Well that sort of reasurring as I was worried me fitting it in the car resulting in longer wires was the problem, but if you are getting the same with it wired so close I guess it cant be that.

Its annoying as there are so few wires it shouldnt be this bloody difficult. I might raid the electronics department at work for some shielded cable for the -ve. Maybe its picking up some noise and causing the miss??

Let me know if you figure it out.

will do as it may be similar problems with mine. I'll be looking at it tonight, real pain as I have to remove the strut brace etc to get to it. But I'll check it all out. Could be an earthing issue though so will investigate that.

Strange thing was mine was fine to start with but started to miss later in the day?

right I've had it all apart again and redone the wiring, and I've made sure the earth was good this time. So far so good. However I'll be testing it on the road tomorrow, so will let you know then

i hope your limiter cuts the signal to the ignition module, not the coil itself. when cutting power to the coil, the coil fires. this can lead to unexpected ignition while trying to block them.

well I've just wired it up as per the instructions! Therefore I'd expect it to do what it says?
