Phosphur Bronze Gear Bush From Bbm

Recommended Posts

Rupertfinch

Good morning, I've the armour on so am prepared for the slating that will follow...

My question - I bought one of the phosphur bronze gear bushes from Stewart BBM in a group buy almost a year back, but how do I go about fitting it? I mean it, I'm a twat who doesn't even know where it's supposed to go.

Any pointers would be greatfully received.

On the top of the subframe near the steering rack is an "l" shaped part of the gear linkage, with one rod coming forward from the lever, one going across to the g/box. The bush fits in this l shaped bit, where it pivots. To get it off, remove gear link rods, if there is a tin cover on top lever this off, then undo the bolt and remove it.

Once off you will see there are (should be) two nylon top hat bushes, the bronze ones replace these. However you may need to file the new bushes to make them a good fit on the bolt, as it is shouldered so it should tighten down without nipping the bushes in the pivoting part, to allow it to pivot smoothly but without play.

Alternatively you obviously don't need these so just send them to me instead :D:lol::rolleyes:

Love the final line Tom. There are plenty of bits I don't need but have to have!

TBH the car's never likely to go near a track, but I'm sure fitting this bush together with Miles' gear rods can't hurt.

Many thanks, I'll be spending a few glorious hour underneath the pug tonight.

I bought this kit as well, got it about 1 week ago!!! Dunno if it will make a difference but Anything to make the gear shifting and feel a bit stiffer that standard!!!

I fitted mine and it worked wonders, really tightened the gearchange up and stopped the gearstick wiggling around too much.

Took me a while to realise where it went. Not the easiest to get to if you've dropped a bigger engine in :D

Awsome feedback, glad i bought one then!! The gear stick in the Gti is very loose and doesnt compliment the sharpness and feel of the steering!! I replaced all the rods and adjusted them and it made a great difference but this will top it im sure!!!
