Head Bolt In Engine Mount

Recommended Posts

kilauea

I'm struggling to see how its physically possible to remove the upper bolt that holds the os engine mount to the head!

I've loosened the lower mount, removed the nut from the upper mount and then jacked the engine up a few inches. But there still isn't room to get a socket in there to get it off. The engine is raised so that its right at the top of the thread of the engine mount and I don't dare go off it just in case.

Any tips? Am I doing something wrong here?....

Looks like as the engine is raised it also rocks back a bit - maybe if it went straight up it *might* leave me room but don't see how I can get it to do that.

There is deffo not the room using a 3/8 to get in there, not even particularly close. I'm quickly starting to hate this car...

Done it.

For any other noobs, here's what the manuals don't tell you....

Raise the engine with the jack under the lower engine mount, that way it goes vertical and gives more room.

Only wind it back out a few turns, then get your socket out otherwise you won't fit it back through the gap you made.

Switch to spanner or hands if its loose enough.

Neither bolt in my experience has room to be withdrawn, so just make sure they are free of the head.

Both the bolts can be withdrawn, you just need to move the engine to line them up with the gaps around the engine mount :)

The lower one is nowhere near an engine mount, it spoils on the body on mine?

I think one of you is on about the mount to mount bolts, and the other is on about the mount to head/block bolts.

kilauea is on about the ones visible in this pic...

Yeah you might be right there. The lower one made getting the head off a swine of a job this morning.

I got it out now (not till after I got the head off though) and I'm not looking forward to putting it back!

On the same ticket one of the bolts (sprung) on the manifold doesn't have clearance to be remove either.

It's these things that make you doubt yourself big time when your doing things for the first time.

That's why my engine is on the floor, next to the car.

You lucky bar-steward!

I might buy an old engine and build it up on a stand. I'm not touching the block this time round so that can be my next challenge.

You need to lift engine higher if you can't get them out :P

It wasn't height that was required on mine - in the end I had to pry the engine backwards and then drift it through past the metal side of the shock turret. I do wonder sometimes if any two 205's are built the same!

Ah ok, thought you meant the top mount bolts.

As I say, I did mine out of the bay. :P
