Quick Help - Cambelt Spring Tensioner?!

Recommended Posts

Saveit

Hi,

Quick help needed as i am in the middle of a cambelt change and it will start raining soon ;)

Finally managed to put my new XU10 (8v) head on my standard 1.9 bottom end. The head have been skimmed by 1.8mm and therefore the cambelt is now all loose. Now i havent changed the cambelt and i have checked that it is lining up with the timing holes. But how do i tension it? I have the springloaded type tensioner. Tried searching and tried reading the haynes manuel but cant quite figure out how to tension the cambelt. Could someone explain? Perhaps by pictures.

Stefan

  • Loosen the two 11mm nuts on the front of the tensioner, and the 16mm nut on the back.
  • Turn the 7mm square peg on the back 90degrees, which turns a cam pushing the roller away and releases tension on the belt
  • If you want to change the cambelt, now is the time to do it
  • With the belt in place and the timing holes aligned on the cam and crank pulley, turn the 7mm square peg back 90degrees to allow the spring to push the roller against the belt and tension it.
  • Tighten the 11mm nuts and the 16mm nut.
  • Turn the engine over by hand and check that it feels right
  • Loosen and retighten the 11mm and 16mm nuts.

Hopefully that makes sense? Don't have any pictures to hand I'm afraid.

The cam shaped thing pulls the tensioner against the spring to allow you to fit the belt. Once it is fitted simply turn the cam shaped thing out of the way to allow the spring to push the roller over to tension the belt. Then tighten the three M7 nuts to clamp it. The spring doesn't always apply enough tension for me so I sometimes lever it over a touch.

Im having problem with this aswell. I've got the belly on, turn the cam 90 degrees so it's pointing down, but the spring is right against the belt and roller. What am i doing wrong???

Doesn't sound like the spring is fitted right.

Pictures paint a thousand words though if possible but it should be just like the picture above.
