306 Gti-6 Strange Transmission? Noise

Recommended Posts

All Praise The GTI

right since i got my 6 in november its made a bloody awful noise. didnt notice it much before as it had a magnex system and decat on it but i changed the driveshafts for a 2nd hand pair i got off a forum member and i think it quietened down abit but was hard to tell but it did stil make a noise and when i changed them i fitted a 205 lower mount i had kicking about as it had a grp n hard rubber bush in it. to help my gearchanges as 2nd crunchs :)

now ive fitted a standard system ive realised something must be badly wrong. its make a really awful noise all the time. its more noticable at 40mph+. its not really a knocking more just a constant drone that gets louder the faster i go and sometimes it sounds like a grating. i checked underneath and cant see a prob and i suspected a driveshaft again. i should mention it is extremely low  and i noticed a sideways movement in the front drivers side wheel which is where the noise appears to come from so i changed the wheel bearing and the balljoint while i was at it but the movement is stil there its asif its the hub???

this noise is doing my head in and i do a fair few miles so im nervous somethings going to go badly wrong and i might crash when driving

as said its like a droning noise ansd i can feel it through the pedals and steering wheel due to the grp n lower bush. and ive noticed sometimes if i steer right the rumbling/vibration goes away but comes back as soon as the steering is straight again

i really cant afford waste any more money changing bits to find out it wasnt it so i need some suggestions please, driveshaft/bearing/ dodgy hub?????

many thnaks in advance

nat

As always hard to say without driving the car, however it could be the wheel bearing on the other side, as sometimes they go noisy when you unload them, whilst sometimes they go noisy when you load them (steering either way).

finally sorted this today. you were right tom... bearing on other side :)

broke the abs sensor so need another one now as per wanted ad and i also got pick up some top mount bearings tomorrow as noticed they literally shot to bits when jacked car up and bits of metal fell on the floor... oops!

Good stuff, it can be tricky diagnosing which wheel bearing is at fault sometimes.

I was going to suggest the same, and in my experience when you fix one the other will go shortly
