Mi16 Throttle Body Breather Take Off (?)

Recommended Posts

trialster

hey pals, just been having a clean up of the breather system on my mi today and found a fair bit of gunk (emulsification) in the filler cap and attached hose. the hose which goes down into the top of the throttle body was full of water, is this normal? i have a feeling that the brass take-off on the top of the throttle body is a breather, is this right?

i tried cleaning it out but didn't seem to make much difference..

Not sure about the breather but I think 'some' gunk is normal in this hot weather and especially if you do lots of stop start driving. If it was me I would check the dipstick for signs of the same, check your water level carefully to see if it is going down(ie headgasket problem), do a compression test and see if the exhaust looks particularly 'steamy'

I am sure you will get a more detailed resonse soon but thats all I have.

Cheers

cheers for the reply.

yeah i've done all the tests, got 160psi in all 4 cyls :) , no water useage, no mayo on the dipstick!

so i reccon the headgasket is ok, its just annoying the amoutn of mayo that is produced!

anyone know if this brass take-off is meant to be linked into the throttle body's air chamber for sure ?

ta!

That brass take off is indeed a breather. It will draw air in through it, if you start the car and place your finger over it you will feel it sucking. Its quite slight though. It normally connects to a tube that in turn runs into a t piece then into the breather system. Visible on picture:

Edit to say the brass pipe is nearly always blocked! Hence why you have water in yours its probably condensation with no where to go.
