205 1.8 Dturbo - Glowplugs

Recommended Posts

The 205 Dturbo is causing problems again when starting. It fires okay but runs lumpy for a couple of minutes before idling correctly. We are thinking this could be glowplug related. If we replace the glowplugs should we replace all 4 or just the 2 that we suspect maybe faulty?

Cheers

Steve

you should always replace them in complete sets, though its best to test them before condemning them, they do last a fair while if o.e specification.

been a while since I worked on these, but does it have a remote lucas fuel filter assembly that has a hand priming button on the top of it? rather than the later filter element pot that sits ontop of the thermostat housing?

these are common for airleaks which can cause starting issues.

Does it give a lot of black smoke on start-up? That might point to the heater plugs not getting up to temp.

Also have you tried waiting another 2-3 seconds after the glow plug light goes out before starting? Does that improve anything?

Don't know if you've got access to the Diesel Haynes but in there it says erratic idling may be caused by;

A fuel system fault

Incorrect valve clearance

Burnt out valves

Blown head Gasket

Might be worth getting a set of new plugs for £15 and see if it helps at all.

as a quick fix try operating the heater plugs 2/3 times

Cheers guys, looks like a new set of glowplugs has done the trick. They don't seem to make these to last anymore :blink:

depend where you get them from, the BERU plugs I fitted to my mum's car 100k miles ago are still going strong.
