Recommended Posts

djinuk

Just wondering, rather than use the heat exchange system on the gti6 for colling the oil , im guessing a lot of people have ditched it for a external setup. If so what setup, where from , what do i need and how much does it cost

Thanks all advice appreciatated.

All GTi's sold in Oz have the remote oil filter kit, which bolts to the gearbox. It makes adding an oil cooler a breeze. Did your models not have remote filters?

No don't think so peter, in England we either have aircooled (rad type, mounted behind bumper) or water cooled (gti6/s16) have you got any pictures we could have a butchers at?

I'm using a mocol kit, mounted in the same place as standard. Got to chop loads of plastic out though.

This adaptor is needed.

Only the very late 205's had the remote Oil filter/Heat Exchanger fitted, These are great for Oil filter change's!!

On the cooling front it really depends on the useage for the size of the cooler, A 13 row is good for fast road and some track day use, I'd stear clear of kit's as they assume mounting the cooler in a certain position, I always buy the cooler fit it and measure up the lines as required

Sound advice, id also not buy a kit, just get a cooler and sandwich plate, then measure the lines and get them made, much easier.

Its best to go to one that DOESN'T specialise in motorsport as they will be more expensive for no reason. I use an agricultural supplier who sell the same stuff from the same catalogues for less money.

I'm heading up to Pirtek in Reading (Oxford Road) tomorrow to try to get some pipes for my new cooler so will let you know if it's successful!

Just bought a kit for my 306 supercharged Rallye and went to Pirtek for the fixings, got two 90 degree fixing's for the cooler and two straight ones for the sandwhich plate, also had 4 metres of oil hose for £55.

A few pictures-

Managed to make it to Pirtek in Reading. Nice friendly bunch.. got the right lengths made up, make sure you get a female-male adapter for the sandwich plate as it makes it a lot easier to install the pipes onto the plate (only need to rotate the fitting, and not the entire pipe). Ended up paying somwhere around £50 which is still way more than I thought it would be.... but from Carl's post, it sounds about right.

So far my day has consisted of mostly destroying the old oil filter in trying to remove it. Resorted to outright vandalism in the end:

Then some general faffing, and ended up with the cooler installed.

Tomorrow i'm prob gonna cut a hole in the left hand panel to feed the pipes through as it definitely needs to be a bit of a neater install before I put the front end back on.

I have a flairing tool for the union and the pipe is pushed over this and a crimp style clip or two are used it should be fine. Taking it on track this time next weekend to the nur berg ring. Last year i had oil temps approaching 140 degress, my arse was twitching.

Little bit of an update.

As some of you will now i took the car to the ring last year and it was great but the oil temps got my arse twitching a little to say the least, i had the temps up at around 140 degress, well its been a year and the ring is booked for friday so i decided to sort out this little issue and fit one of my intercoolers to rid the boost pipes under the front panel.

Started on the car at 8am this morning and i now have no boost pipes under ther car, an oil cooler fitted and moved everything around to make it a neat and tidy job.

Photos do the talking so have a look for yourself, all the front removed, old intercooler out and the oil cooler and charger oil cooler mounted-

rallyeintercooler.jpg

New intercooler fitted and mocked up to fit the new brackets to secure it-

rallyeintercooler1.jpg

as i have mount sucker fans rather than pushers, the space was alittle tight around the oil filter due to the sandwhich plate so i had a little idea to pop to halfords and get a Renault oil filter, half the size and fits perfect (£7.90 that bugger cost!!!!) Forst thing tomoorw i will order a genuine Renault one just to be safe.

rallyeintercooler3.jpg

All mounted and now plumbed in, topped up the charger fluid and added a little more engine oil-

rallyeintercooler2.jpg

This is how she looks now without the pipes out the bottom, notice the blue silicon hose in the lower grill:ninja

rallyeintercooler4.jpg

On the drive home the oil temp never went above 100 degress and i was giving it some death, also seems the pickup feels nicer and the all important silicon hose that sucks itself in is no longer. All in all a great days work.

Big thanks to the welder, and my engineer for helping me out, oh and for hundreds of nuts, bolts and shiney washers!:love

What do you think?

If only sorry, started it eight yesterday and finished around 1pm,

It looks a small amount of work but it takes an age making the brackets welding the boost pipes etc.
