Washer Pump Woes - Not Working / Faulty Wiring?

Recommended Posts

If you're getting a reading at the terminals then that suggests the stalk is working?

Can you cut the wires back any further to crimp new terminals on where it connects to the pump?

if you get 12v at the pump it has to be dirty connections or a bad earth, the stalk is fine, you wouldn't have 12v if it wasn't....

chop the old terminals off, strip back to good wire, fit new terminals :D

I have already cut the wires back as far as I can and still no joy :D

Should I be getting about 3-4v at the + while the switch is off?

I will try earthing it direct to battery and run a new length of wire from fuse box to washer pump +

Have you managed to fix this yet as It sounds like I have a similar problem, 4 volts on the wire to the pump even with the switch removed

I've been watching your thread hoping for an answer

Did you try re-wiring it all as I think that will be next (after I sort out my track rod end)

well mine was down to a poor earth and a shagged stalk,

The way i fixed the poor earth was a new spade connecter on the wire, then i ran a wire front the main earth point on the inner wing, to the 2 earth blocks on the headlinght pannels,

As for the stalk on mine i have to realy heave it back for the washers to kick in

Paul.

Thanks for that, something to look at. Maybe a job for tomorrow depending on how easy my other track rod end comes off.

I had a similar problem to this, my washer would not work at all from the stalk, but the motor itself was fine straight off the battery. So I took to taking the stalk to bits!

I found that pulling the stalk forward to switch the washers on wasn't quite making the contacts, all was need was tapping one of the contacts to push it closer to the other, and hey presto she worked fine again.

Not quite the same as your problems, but hopefully it'll help someone out there!

Seemes to be same solution for mine, the stalk/switch needs rebuilding, got it to work but stopped again, needs a bit more work to get the adjustment right.

Still cannot explain why there is still 4 volts on the wiring though

Rebuilt the switch yesterday cleaned the contacts for the washer bit of the switch. After the switch was working also found that the connectors in the plastic block at the pump where corroded and therefore caused the washer pump to work intermittently , new connectors sorted that. now working properly

Hope this helps others who have been happening similar problems

Cheers

Finally got around to putting new spade connectors on the pump and cleaning up / dissasembling / reassembling the stalk and it all sort of works. I'm going to need new jets as mine seem fairly blocked but at least I now have water (although as with you I have to heave the stick back a bit to get it to work)

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Was going to take some piccies at the weekend when I had a similar problem, but of course I didnt!

I also stripped the stalk. The washers are activated when you pull the stalk by closing a pair of contacts behind it. In my case these contacts needed cleaning to make the circuit. The stalk assembly comes apart by removing the 3 matal clips, apart from not loosing the spring on the stalk, it's very simple. With it all plugged in and the stalk itself removed, the contacts are closed, BTW, and the pump should be spinning.

As Steve says, but the washer contact is a strip of brass that pivots beneath another brass terminal strip. You need to lever that brass strip ONLY SO FAR AS NECESSARY out of the way so that you can pick out the pivoting contact strip. From memory this has two small silver metal contacts on the side you can't see. These should be cleaned with an ink rubber, then wiped with a clean rag. Also clean the matching contact points in the stalk housing. Then re-insert the contact strip, carefully bend back the fixed brass strip & reassemble. I found mole grips ideal for re-folding the steel strips back that hold everything back together...these need to be set to compress the steel clips adequately, but of course not so far as to crack the plastic housing.

Jason, was it the new spade connectors that made it work of rebuilding the stalk? or both ?

I'm not 100% sure but I think it was both, the connectors at the pump end were quite corroded and brittle and the stalk still needs pulling back harder than it should. I'll be taking the stalk apart and trying again when I have time.

To be honest both jobs don't take very long so I think it is worth doing if you have problems.

The issue with mine is the front washer pump didnt work, so i connected the pump direct to the battery and it still didnt work (duff pump i thought) i then tried the washer pump from the rear bottle (which is working) but that didnt work at the front (so its just a coincidence that the pump didnt work aswell) Ill get the mulitmeter out and have a see what im getting to the wires and take it from there
