Radiator Fans Not Working?

Recommended Posts

edbar

The fans have always played up but now dont work at all! Is the big sensor in the rad anything to do with the fans? All new temp sensors in the engine and put new connections on the previously bodged twin fan conversion so done all that springs to my mind.

Any help or trouble shooting ideas appreciated. Edd.

Thermoswitch on the radiator or corroded connections are the usual two causes - it's a fairly common issue that should come up lots searching.

Unplug the thermoswitch and bridge two of the pins on the wiring connector with a thick piece of wire - two should run the fan on slow speed, and two should run it on high speed (center pin is common IIRC). If that works, your thermoswitch is likely knackered.

First question makes sense: YES. Second bit...doesn't.

Right!

If when bridging the connections in the multi-plug (and I'm sorry: this has been covered many times) the fan works, then you know it's the switch in the rad. Take it out; go to main dealer; get a replacement; screw it in; refill the coolant and bleed it with multiplug reattached and you should be good to go.

Don't forget it could also be a bad earth to the fan and the switch is fine. This would give nothing, like you have, or intermittent rad fan(s).

If it's the connections, make sure they aren't lose, then emerse them in vinegar to loosen up the corrosion, then scrub it off with a wire brush.

Tried bypassing the thermo switch and still no cigar so think the connection to the fans from the loom might be the culprit, will try and clean that up and see, if not might just say sod it and get a pacet or kenlowe kit with its own thermostat.
