How To Tell If A Lsd Is Worn

Recommended Posts

wildejon

Hopefully this isn't going to make me sound too stupid...

I have a 2nd hand Tran-x diff and want to check its not too worn before I fit it. Can I do that and what do I need to look for?!

Thanks

Jon

Just check bits for wear I think.

some useful info on here - I think its mainly the plates that wear which are £78.

Check the torque settings on the diff, if both wheel are different then it proabably needs a rebuild, if both wheel are the same it will be ok however you can change the pressure setting for tarmac or gravel setup. Last time I checked mine was set to about 75nm each side.

To check the pressure of the diff is real easy as long as it in a car (plated diffes only).

1) jack only 1 front wheel up.

2) use a torque wrench & socket to fit onto driveshaft nut, use the torque wrench to turn the wheel (forward driven wheel direction), keep adjusting the wrench until it just clicks, look at the torque settings and thats what the diff is set too.

3) do the other side.

4) compare both measurements, if both are the same or similar then fine, if not speak to Tran X.

Hope this helps.

Thats a helpful post, thanks.

It hasn't been fitted as yet but I was assured it was ok when I bought it so I'll give it a go and find out!
