Mi 16 Dizzy Converter

Recommended Posts

mmt

Hi,

I´m about to install a mi 16 engine in my 205.

Where should I buy the converter for the dizzy?

Or could I build it myself? Drawings anyone?

Thanks

/Martin

Made one myself out of a size 24 top with 12 "edges" (LINK) instead of the usual 6 edge top - very important, otherwise it wont fit. That fit perfectly around the mi16 camshaft, and the small end of the top has the same diameter as the dizzy. Did some measureing and cut a 3mm wide slice down the side of it and welded a piece of 3mm thick metal to act as the pin lining up with the "crack" in the camshaft. Then took the angle grinder and cut the horizontal "groove" over the small end of the top so that it mates with the pin on the dizzy. Voila :) I looked very good and i cant see why it shouldnt work. Just have to be careful to measure everything so that it doesnt advance/retard the timing. Never got around to testing it though since i forgot to remove locking pin on the crank pulley......... Can take some pictures of it though.

205turbo

you can cut down a 8v dizzy mounting to fit the mi16

Yes but the dizzy wont fit the camshaft. The camshaft has its "groove"/"crack" (dont know what else to call it) down the side, where on the 1.9 gti its on the end of it.

So you can groove the camshaft to fit.

But my advice would be, don't bother.

Use Mi16 management everyime.

I´m going to use carbs on the engine.

Saveit I´ve sent you a message.

So? why not have the proper ign. management then?

Using clockwork crap is just silly IMO.

Yes i also ended up with using the motronic management after i got myself a new engine, since the motronic came with it. It is very easy to wire up. I would do that if i were to put an mi16 engine in to a 205 again, but the converter i made is not at all crap. It works and is just as good as the buyable dizzy converter which cost a smaller fortune. But yes, you could maybe groove the camshaft to fit. May be even better.

What is the difference between the 205 management and the mi16 management.

Is there a guide on how to "rewire" ?

The convertor may not be crap, but the management itself is, why run an engine that comes with reasonably good management on older analog rubbish that isn't suited to it...

I completely agree Baz  But i tried to do as cheap as possible, so i used the converter to start with. But when i trashed the engine and the new engine came with the motronic mangement and loom, then i used that. But mmt told me that he is trying to do it as cheap as possible, and if he doesnt have a loom and ecu then he have to get a hold of it. And parts are not as easy to find in denmark as in UK.

True, As cheap as possible and as simple as possible as I am no tecnical genius(very far from).

Does the engine run better on the mi management? What´s the problem with running on the 205 management?

Yes it will run better. Dont know the actual difference, but the management that comes with the engine is therefore of course suited for that engine. The distributor system is rather old now, and it is controlled mechanically by the cam and therefore it cant be controlled as well as by the eletronic mangement, afaik

To answer your question, Constella do them. There are a few others, but they are all expensive. I would also reccomend re-tapping out more holes so you can get more advance.

Thats the main problem i had with a mates one i helped to set up, couldnt get enough advance into it, so had to start drilling/slotting!

Baz, doesn't the Motronic system base the ignition advance on the load signal from the AFM & RPM of the engine? So with MI management and only the throttle pot connected I would have thought you could only use the ignition advance vs RPM map at 3 load points:

1. idle

2. a set part throttle value by using a resistor to trick the ecu into seeing a set AFM value

3. full throttle

How does it get on with the AFM disconnected?

Has anyone used the Constella adapter?

Is it any good? And are they ok to do business with?

The only issue with my mi running carbs and the 8v ignition system was a lumpy tickover(which I am not 100% sure was the ignitions fault). It made great power, is very driveable and is very very simple to install.

Good with wires and have some spare cash-connect up the 16v system

Bad with wires and a bit skint-fit the dizzy, lengthen the ht leads and have fun.
