Stereo Wiring

Recommended Posts

ive recently bought another 205gti,, the wiring has been messed about with for the stereo, the original wiring has been converted to take a more modern head unit which is fine, but after plugging in the new head unit i get power etc, but no sound at all, not even a hiss... inside there are several wires that are just taped up and i cant made head or tail of what goes where.. i think that there was a "ned" ice system put in before i had it. Does anyone have a pic of how the wiring should look after the convertion for a modern head unit, with speakers etc,, please remember im a complete novice at this type of thing..or perhaps I should just take it to a car audio dude... any help is greatly appreciated.

If you have got 4 sets of 2 of wires, i.e the poss and neg of each speaker, going into the head unit then I'd check the wire are plugged into the speakers. If that makes sense!!

wow that wiring looks an absolute mess. I can't take any pics for you as I dont have my release keys with me at the moment.

Those speaker wires are normally attached to a small block which takes up half the ISO 'cube' once they're connected.

If you look at the wiring on the new headunit, at the coloured speaker wires on the ISO connector, then follow those same colours on the cars wiring..... and see if there are any breaks in the circuit.

It's hard to tell from pictures but personally I would either pull all that bodged wiring apart and re-route it yourself, or just cut all the dodgy stuff out and put your own fresh wiring in. (this would just require lengths of cable and those 2 ISO blocks which you can grab off eBay reasonably cheap).

--------------------------------------------------------

I would do the following:

1.) Buy this. (you already have those in your car but it would be easier to start fresh).

2.) Pull all the bodges wiring apart so it's easier to see what goes where.

3.) Look at the colour of the wires that hang from the back of your new headunit, and try and find that colour in the car. If you find the right colour tick it off on a list or something.

4.) Once you've found all the right coloured wires inside your car, connect them to the new ISO cubes you bought on eBay.

Problem being it looks like a total mess and i'd be tempted to just follow all the original wires into the car, and just throw all the newer 'added' ones in the bin.

Just to let you know you can run the stereo fine with just a switched live (usually the red wire), but you will need a permanent live (usually a yellow wire) too if you want your stereo to remember all your settings.

Sorry of all that sounded really confusing, i'll try and help you further if you get stuck.
