Sealing Liners

Currently my Mi16, despite having new liner seals from QEP is leaking water from 'somewhere' into the oil, I'm guessing it could be the liner seals? As opposed to actually using seals I'm thinking about pulling each piston + liner while the crank is locked at MDC and running a thick bead of sealant around each one before popping them back in.

 

Anyone any suggestions as to what sealant to use? I've been recommended Sikaflex?

Clean throughly liner seal seating/contact surface in the block (and check that the surface is smooth , without cracks , craters , missing bits , pits etc. usually caused because of a lack of coolant system maintenance - if left for too long antifreeze turns into acid and "eats" parts of the block which is in contact with coolant medium .. i had to scrap one block because of this !) afterwards , clean liner seal seating surfaces on all the 4 liners , all around , with WD fluid and scotchbrite pads (or fine grade sanding paper) wash off with brake cleaner and inspect the area , also check each liner for rust formation or craters on the liner seal seat area ... buy new liner seals and coat them lightly with RTV sealant , fit the seals on the liners and smear some more sealant on top of the seals all around (but don't go mad with sealant !) , press the liners inside the block and job done :ph34r:

Have a look at Tom fenton's 1.6 tubby rebuild, lots of info ;) .........Id use welseal.

i had same problem the kits o rings where too small so i put some DOW CORNING auto sil rubber sealent solved the prob but got others now lol sods law

But even with these new seals Sandy (anyone), would you still suggest the whole process as described above AND a sealant product?

I used new seals and wellseal when I built mine, touch wood it keeps its oil and its water where they should be.

I don't apply any sealer to the liner base personally, because there's a risk it might cure in an uneven shape and prevent correct seating if the liner isn't clamped evenly immediately. As long as the block seats and liner ridges are properly cleaned/finished and the o-ring is fitted with a smear of grease and care is taken not to twist or distort it in any way, it's the best it can be. The biggest issue is getting the seats prepared (most are pretty much knackered to start with) and getting even deck protrusion.

The 2 that I have built this year have just had the genuine liner seals and a smear of grease on them. No faults as yet, touch wood, but both my blocks had good seats in them and I had them well cleaned before they went in. I think thats the knack in it.

In regards to sealer for engines, gearboxes etc, the only stuff I use, recommend is the genuine toyota stuff. It is £53 a tube though :ph34r: . But it is the only stuff and is water and oil resistant. Never had a leak from anything Ive built with it provided the surfaces are preped correctly.

As good blocks become harder to find, you may wish to consider remachining the liner bases, then decking block/liners to suit.
