Problems Fitting Down Pipe To Manifold!

Recommended Posts

mattw

I have replaced my old cracked manifold with another standard one as well as fitting a full stainless steel exhaust.

The trouble I'm having is getting a good connection between the manifold and the down pipe. It seems like the angle is off.

When it's fitted and tightened I can still see quite a bit of the mesh ring which is where it's now blowing.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I thought about removing the manifold and fitting it to the down pipe before then bolting it to the head in order to get a good fit but I thought this may put too much strain on the manifold studs and may cause the manifold to blow where it joins the head?

Any suggestions would be great before I take the whole thing off again!!

That wont work anyway, as the downpipe joint is 'floating', so the manifold would just swivel on the joint when you attached it to the head. Are we talking about a std GTI manifold here? Is the stainless exhaust including the downpipe?

Yes it's a standard manifold and the down pipe is stainless....I'll try to get a pic up in a sec.

Any one have any ideas about fixing this? I don't want to go bodging it with a load of exhaust paste but I maight have to in order to get it through it's MOT.

If the dowpipe is new then that is at the wrong angle. As long as the exhaust is fitted properly (level underneath the car etc) then the flange needs cutting off the downpipe and reangling, then welding back on.

Also does anyone know what the electrical plug is in the second photo?

Looks like the mesh gasket is either too big, maybe the wrong one, or is not the right shape, ie broken or has moved when you tightened it up. Or maybe the downpipe joining sleeve thing is too small for the mesh gasket?

The wire I think is a diagnostics connections but not used now or maybe ever I wouldn't think.

Is it an oe gasket or 1 of those ones off e-bay? if it is the e-bay 1 you will have great difficulty in getting it to fit as they are not of the same material and theyre quite a bit thicker as i found out myself a few months ago..

Was it one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...s%3DI%26otn%3D2

I bought the same kit and now you guys mention it I seem to remember mine looking similar to this, and I'm sure I can hear air being pushed around with the bonnet up.

How would a slack seal effect performance etc... ?
