where is the knock?

Is it rev dependant? (does it get worse at higher revs?)

have they spun or just worn out?

either way it would be salvageable if no major damage has been caused.

Bearings worn out on 3 and 4, The garage its at want £1500 to fix, I dont have that kinda money on me so I'm going to get the car back and try find another engine and swap it.

Should be cheaper and easier as I dont know enough about engine internals to have ago myself!

Posted a wanted thread if anyone has any info about an engine going spare but i think my best plans buying a full running s16 and brake it up.

take the engine out and strip it down to a bottom end yourself and it'll cost a hell of a lot less than £1500 when you go and see an engine specialist.

I would love to, but I dont really have the right tools, I havent got a engine stand just a crane, plus I would need to get the crank reground, new oil pump, all the seals and gaskets and set up the timing again, couple that to me not having a clue it could end up worse than it is just now.

no need for a new oil pump, these tend not to go wrong at all.

is it not a good time to learn ? B)

If there ever was a time its now I'll agree, what would be the procedures involed in the repair of this? who much would need replaced and how much bought new etc? you have me thinking about it now...

yup, looks fatter in the middle, just like my zx's engine was, and that had never been out of the shell and was only on 122k miles.

if it had spun, would that knock the timing out? also funny you should say 122k as that engine was at 120kish

Don't think so, but would mean (99% sure) you need a new con rod and a crank polish, and at worst a grind. I think a new engine would be cheaper, but stripping and rebuilding will teach you a lot about an engine.

no, it's totally unrelated to the timing, it would have caused some damage to the crank and conrod, though how bad that would be you'll never know until you get it to an engineer.

another engine wont be any cheaper in reality, what's to say it wont spin a bearing again, unless you get a warranted low mileage gti6.

Its just there is a tapping coming from the head too, sounds like the pistons hitting the valves.

Another engine is a gamble I'm willing to take, if it runs before and after the swap then my car (my everyday round about) is back on the road, I will also have a spare engine to strip down and rebuild and learn from, everything so far has been a learning curve for me..

If you have one shell in you hand, what's in the engine on the rod when you are listening to it running?

its no longer running but before it was taken apart there was a tap from the head and from the bottom
