So What Would Need Replacing?

Recommended Posts

Following on from this thread, I have now managed to strip down the offending engine.

I came across this today (don't get an iPhone for its camera), this does not look good does it? The other three are completely smooth and silver in colour, is that good or even worse? I also found lots of bits of copper in the bottom of the sump when I took it off.

So what is knackered?

This shell obviously but what about the crank, would a regrind sort it.

What should I bin and what can I reuse/sell?

I had quite a good standard head attached, it looks okay but I would like to sell it, would it have caused any damage to that?

Thanks

Jonny

A regrind is about £120 iirc, new shells are £30 and you would need to get that rod checked for being oval. You could buy a 2nd hand engine for less, but then you wouldnt be able to judge on the condition of the engine.

Has it spun or was it just knocking?

if the conrods haven't been damaged and the crank is still straight you could get the crank ground and fit oversized bearings to suit.

I think it may have spun. Will the head be okay still?

it depends on the clearance with your valves, was it a standard cam (no extra lift)? i wouldnt have thought it would come into contact witht he head/valves.

Even if it has spun a bearing the head will be OK imo, the piston / valve clearance isn't that tight on the 8v engines iirc but they are an interference engine should the belt snap.

You've got the head off already haven't you? If you have check the pistion crown for damage & also the valves if there is any sign of contact.

Graham.

Thanks Graham, I have checked the pistons and valves and they look fine.

£120  For a re-grind, last Crank I had done only cost £40!! £5 per journal

What makes you think it has spun? I don't think it would have done.

I agree with Alex about the crank regrind - more likely to be £5-10 per journal depending where you go.
