Mi16 Liners / Custom Liners

Recommended Posts

M_R_205

iv been throwing a few ideas around at work and i need to know how thick the mi16 liners are as standard, and by how much could they be bored out by? the std bore is 83, so im assuming taking 1mm off (85mm bore) will be safe enough, could i be daring enough to go to 1.5mm to gain an 86mm bore and use the s16 pistons?

If not are custom liners available or am i just gong to be pissing in the wind with this idea

Cheers

Paul.

have you had a liner out and seen what you have to play with, I know from recently re sealing a set of 8v xu9 liners that there ain't much to play with

I think 86mm has been done but they get wafer thin resulting in not great reliability

Would love to see the outcome of this topic as I would definitely go down this route too

I have just measured a set i have in the garage(with a tape so not to accurate),the main part of the liner is about 7mm thick BUT,the thin part where the liners butt together is only 4mm thick so i wouldn't want to bore them out anymore than .5mm,which is what Ive done twice with no problems

Miles can get bigger liners though the block needs modifying

This is quite a large expense thou isn't it and also he can't just do a one off set, would have to be a few sets although I'm not sure

Miles????

84mm Is the biggest I'd go on the std liners for reliability.

I do have a set of 86.5mm Liners somewhere but the block needs machining to suit and they are less then 2.5mm think at the sides.

well the plan is/was? to build a larger capacity 8v and im sure the 16v liners are thicker and do fit the 8v block, as i said the main reason i want a 86mm bore is so i can posibly use the s16 pistons

Thats a thought, if i went with a smaller bore could i just simply turn down the s16 pistons or are they specialy coated?

Cheers

Paul

Theres no way of using a steel block mi on an 8v head is there, im asssuming some of the oil/water ways wont match up but i could get around that with some clever welding/drilling??

xu oilways are all the same....

take away the mi16 pistons with their 4 valve cutouts and fit an 8 valve head an you have the 123 bhp XU10J2 in essence! and underpowered heavy engine....

What's so good about S16 pistons? They're terribly heavy. Going to 86mm is great if you can do it, but there's plenty of better pistons available.

This is the reason i want to stick with the the alloy gti block

There cheap and very easy to come by, im planning on building the engine as chaply as possible and spending £450 + on pistons is a big outlay

if it's the one in your sig I doubt you'll get any more without some pistons.

have been meaning to call you lately mate about what to do with that Gti 6 engine i have at yours still, not gonna do anything with the block but i wanna use the head on an ally block, not sure whether to increase cc or drop to 1800cc yet so ill give you a shout soon, its bonus time soon so funds will be available )
