Mi16 Stuttering

Recommended Posts

Ethos

Had to brake fairly hard earlier when someone pulled out in front of me... which gave the 205 a nice wiggle as the brakes are VERY unbalanced at the moment.

Ever since this event the car has been stuttering on full throttle, normally after 4k but I have noticed it has done it a couple times below this.

Visual check of the engine doesn't give any clues, I've reseated the afm connector and tried another ignition amp with same result.

I'm fairly hopeful it's nothing major but thought i'd get your views...

Thanks

Could be vacuum servo unit :) or leaky one way valve on the servo which connects servo with the inlet manifold ..

Hmm, I'll take a look. Took a video (warning, worst video every in the history of videos)...but might help.

Electrical issue perhaps. Coil, dizzy..?

Well I THINK i've fixed it after having a little once over.

Cleaned all breather pipes, damn these things seem to get REALLY gunked up no matter what (hard drive rarely clears them).

Cleaned coil connection (was fairly manky)

Clean all earths

... I think possible the main issue was one of the bolts for the starter motor was out a good inch.

Been for a couple of test runs and didn't experience it anymore, hopefully I've fixed it :D

Ok, well it's back again!

It's different this time, it's mainly in 1st and 2nd when pulling away, 3rd+ seems ok. It's pretty much the same feeling as posted in the video.

Any other things I could check? I noticed one of the ht leads is a BIT loose, but surely that wouldn't make it judder violently.

Suggestions welcome ... :(

it sounds as though from the video thats its hitting the rev limiter... which it cant be. :(

Yeah, I guess you could say it felt like that.

It seems to be only doing it in 1st and 2nd gear now and from around 1-2k .... haven't taking it up the revs much.

I think it seems to really show itself when the car is warm. I'm waiting for it to cool right down and am going to take it out in a bit to see if it's still happening.

is it using water?

A little, but it's used a bit of oil and water since I'd installed it. I think there is a little oil leak (I can see it on one of the pipes) but it doesn't seem to use that much.

I've made another video to give more clues, it seems to be getting worse- it's happening in most gears now. I know the video is awful but it took some skill holding it with the car juddering!!!!

Tried another ignition amp, which gave exactly the same results (just tried again as well, drive 5 meters up the road... then reversed back ha).

Replug all your ignition leads.

I spent time and money replacing everything else in the chain before and then found it was theat simple. :(

Tried that as well, also double checked all spark plugs were tight. Like I said one HT lead was a little loose, but not too bad.

Remember this happened after I had brake v.hard...

Well girlfriend dropped me to work this morning and it started pretty much straight away, the look on her face!

She seemed to think it was fuel related. Suppose the hard braking could have dislodge some junk in the trunk? *adds new fuel filter to list*

It sounds like an electrical problem to me, a loose connection possibly, are there any bits of loom that are at all tightly routed? If so they might have been pulled about while you braked heavily if the engine moved on its mounts or something.

As your starter was loose I would check the gearbox is tightly attached to the engine block as they have a habit of coming loose. If that happens the crank sensor can become misaligned from the flywheel which will potentially confuse the ECU.

I think most of the loom is pretty well routed and not that tight. The main power loom and possible the connections on the starter motor are slightly tight but can't see that causing this affect?

I checked the gearbox last night, it's on fine- although I did notice the viewing cover on top isn't present- I honestly can't remember if I put this on after the conversion, but assume it couldn't fall down the viewing hole :)

Could take the crank sensor off and try and re-seat that I guess.

I've reconnected pretty much everything, the only thing I haven't look at properly is the dizzy cap...

Couldn't always check the brown multiplugs under the dash just incase.

Steve kindly leant me a spare coil to test today- that didn't help unfortunatly.

Was going to try replacing the fuel filter but halfords didn't have the right model in, was quite different to the one I have in at the moment, will pop to another place this week and pick one up.

Might look into how hard it is to check the fuel pump itself...

Just wanted to say fuel pump :) , but don't bother much with checking (check just the wiring bit from the fuse box to the pump if it's all sound ..) simply try with another known good fuel pump ..
