405 Glx Box

Recommended Posts

as the title ive got a 405 1.6 glx be3 gearbox and was wondering if anyone knows what sort of ratios it'll use. My brother drove the car before removing it and said how short geared it felt so I was thinking of putting it my track car (as it'll cost nothing and save me looking for one). any ideas?? cheers allan

IIRC they'll have a nice 1-2-3, then a massive gap to 4th and a reeeealllyyyy long 5th, on top of a tall final drive.

doubt there is one still there but is there a code on the box?

The famous "close ratio" box :D i have one on my car , as said , it's *fine* until you switch into 5-th :D

Ratios are as follows :

1:3,31

2:1,88

3:1,28

4:0,97

5:0,76

FD:4,06

So it's a 1.6GTI 1st and 2nd and FD, with Mi16 3rd 4th and 5th.

1.6GLX 1.6GTI Mi16

1st 3.31 3.31 2.92

2nd 1.88 1.88 1.85

3rd 1.28 1.36 1.28

4th 0.97 1.07 0.97

5th 0.76 0.87 0.76

FD 4.06 4.06 4.43

Interesting mix.

Would the 1.6GTI box not still be closer though: 3rd 4th and 5th are all higher when compared to GLX box.

If the jump to 5th is so awkward why not just use the 1.6 box. Is it that bad, because I fancy having a long 5th for motorways, if you need to go just drop down?

Yes  someone somewhere somehow said that this one is close ratio box (1.6 GLX , 1.9 SRi) , and the gears are actually wider spaced than the ordinary 1.6 box :D .

For me , well it's not so bad on a 1.9 8v engine despite this 5-th gear which is a bit too long :D anyway mine still pulls reasonably good in 5-th so i don't always need to shift down for 4-th while im overtaking , the benefit of having this box is for sure quiet traveling on a flat straight road or generally for covering long distance every day .. it's on the up hill , twisty roads where you need to keep the revs higher and shift down for lower gear more frequently as the long 5-th gear is really useless on this type of road with up hill/down hill configuration ..

Damir :o

EDIT - few clips which i've made with this box fitted on a 405 Mi16 car and my 205 :

405 Mi16

205

.. as you can see it's a bit crappy on a 16v engine .

So whilst this box (GLX) has the best of both worlds: 1.6 acceleration with diesel like longer cruising gears, the downsides are longer 3rd and 4th.

So would you recommend putting a 0.76 5th into a 1.6GTI box? You would still have all the fun of 1st-4th with a cruising gear, or is it too long?

I love that in theory you would have a top speed of 153mph at 7000rpm! or 168mph at 7000rpm in a std 1.9 box! Not that the car could do that but...!!!

It's a shame there isn't room for the 6 speed box!

cheers chaps, so in standard form this box is little to no use for a track only car then. bummer

I've experienced this box in a 1.6 205, it was pretty awful!

...due to the longer high gears? so not recommended?

Id say just 4-th and 5-th :D:) well 5-th gear mainly , as it's not that bad from 1-st to the 4-th at least not on 1.9 engine ..

Been thinking about swapping the fifth gear from this SRi box onto the 1.6 one , but me thinks that then the gap between the 4-th and 5-th will be too big B) dunno will have to try that first , anyway i had 1.6 box on my car for 3/4 years and i liked punchy acceleration and short spaced gear shift but also dislike the "shotgun rev" noise and short 5-th gear :) , which is why i removed it and fitted this SRi item !

This box (as high lighted by Damir) is the same as the 405 SRi.

The longer third isn't a problem on a decent 1.6, if anything I prefered this ratio when I had this box on my 1.9 due to the slightly longer ratio.

Fourth is the same ratio as the standard 1.9 box which isn't ideal on a 1.6 but works in some ways.

The fifth gear ratio kills it to much that when I had this box on my 1.6 (short lived) some of the hills on the M1 meant it was borderline going to fourth to maintain speed.

Not as bad on a 1.9 engine ( I used mine with it for a year inc trackdays) but I wouldn't fit one again.

I've been looking at swapping the fourth & fifth on this box back to standard 1.069 & 0.86 GTI ratios making a box with a very close third to fourth.

Graham.

Graham , how does std. 1.9 box performs in comparison with this the 405 SRi box on an 1.9 8v engine ? :P which one is worst in between the two ? :P as i have one spare 1.9 box but i never tried it yet so i dunno if it worths the bother fitting it instead of this SRi item ...

.. presumably ,by looking at the gear ratios, it'll be even loner than this SRi box from 1-st to the 4-th right

The main difference is the final drive. Both the SRI and 1.6 box share the high fd so the gearing is much shorter.

The 1.9 fd is lower so you dont have quite as close a box but 5th is better than that in the 1.6 box still not that nice at speed. Certainly less difference when comapred to the SRI box I should think!

Graham...?

I never ran my car with a standard 1.9 box so I can't give an honest opinion on the difference between the two, I have a 1.6 box fitted now & thats more enjoyable with the type of roads I use mostly.

The 1.9 box will be longer first thru third but fourth is the same & fifth shorter than the SRi box.

The higher rpm on the motorway doesn't bother me, just means I have less chance of a speeding ticket. :P

The box I'm looking at making from my old SRi one by fitting the GTI fourth & fifth would be a hybrid because I already have the 1.9 first gear fitted so it will end up basically a 1.6 box with a longer third.

Well , only thing that bothers me with this SRi box is that loooong 5-th gear  , i don't mind longer 4-th really but this the 5-th it's a bit annoying sometimes .. been thinking just to swap 5-th gear for shorter one however i dunno which 5-th gear from which box ?! 1.6 or mi16 5-th fitted in the SRi box will be just like std. 1.6 box so that doesn't make sense , i might just fit the 1.6 box back then ..

Fitting an Mi fifth won't change anything on the SRi gearbox, it has the same 0.76 ratio & fitting a 1.6 (or 1.9) 0.865 fifth ratio would make it the same as a 1.6 fifth so fourth to fifth would be very close. (23kmh difference in max gear speeds @ 7k).

I did try a ZX 1.9 volcane gearbox for a couple of weeks (uncertain of exact ratios but FD was 3.8 iirc) which should be lower geared than a 1.9 box & I didn't like it at all so I swapped to the 1.6 box which has been on my car longest now with no plans to swap to one thats much different.

Would one of these with a 1.9 final drive be fantastic for a supercharged car? I will let someone else do the maths!!

That would make it the same box as you have fitted in the skip so you should be able to tell us all.
