Oil Catch Tank + Breather Filter

Recommended Posts

MrG

do many run their cars with an oil catch tank and breather?

After a spirited run at Cadwell (well all day really) I noticed that I needed one so am looking about. But have noticed many put them in different places and they are made of differing materials (stainless/empty plastic bottle etc). So do you have one if so what is it and where is it sited? I have a Phase 1 so is it a case of locating it in a convenient place? And lastly do I need the breather filter on it or is it OK for the pipework to be just plumbed into it so its sealed?

Thanks

I've got an alloy one from Rally Design, was pretty cheap as those sort of things go. Its mounted where the battery used to be but I might move it. I don't bother with a filter, just run a pipe from the output underneath the car. Most (all) track / race cars I've seen don't bother with filters.

To pass an MOT you are not supposed to vent the oily gas into the atmosphere, hence why people put breather filters on to catch the crap in the gas. Not sure how much difference a little filter makes but the MOT tester will accept it. You could always take it off again after, or to be honest I bet most garages would not even notice or care what it did!!!

Mine didn't. ;)

I always thought the breathers were just invented for engine bling.
