Which Aftermarket Oil Cooler Setup Is Best?

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

I don’t have an oil cooler fitted to my XU19J2 lump, I didn’t have a problem with excessive oil temperature at the ‘ring last month but I didn’t think I will be as lucky on tracks such as Cadwell.

My question is which is the best oil cooler setup? I suspect that I need a 13 roil Mocal, but what are the best size pipes and am I correct in thinking that a thermostat is advisable?

Final question is about best place to locate, is it where Peugeot put the OE one in the 1.9?

Thanks

Jonny

i think mocal or setrab are perfectly good. i used mocal 13 rows with a thermostat sandwich plate for my 8v and it was perfectly alright. but the mi didn't do good with the 13 rows after a sprint uphill in summer here so i switched to 25 rows setrab, it goes fine now.

the best place to place the oil cooler? i vote for the front end because it will provide enough fresh cooling air to maintain the efficency.

almost forget to mention, i am living in far east, hong kong. we get over 32 degree celcius during summer.

one more advice, place a piece of rubber between the mountings to absorb the vibration to avoid any cracking, no harm.

I ran a mocal on my Mini, had no issues there either, front mounted behind the grille on that.

I'd be suprised if you have any issues with it over heating at a track like cadwell, yes hot, but not off the chart hot.

I'm not bothering to fit one with this engine, or rather I'm waiting to see if its worth bothering, the other option is an alloy sump, no oil cooler needed then, less bling on the spec sheet, but far simpler.

I still needed an oil cooler when running an alloy sump, went for a 16 row one figuring at least I can tape it off if it runs too cold.

I run a std oil cooler set up and so far no issues at all.

I run a Mocal setup on mine..

Its a vast improvement over the stock water/oil cooler; i found at the end of a hard session not only was the oil hot, but the heat of the oil actually raised the coolant temp too.

The 16v valve engines defo need it, I've got a 13row cooler in a bag somewhere, but the 8v's don't seem to make as much heat, guess it's rev related

I love that install Stu, I think I have seen a photo of your car with the bumper back on in the past. Do you have one you can post up?

At 7 500rpm the oil in my 1.6 8v, went to 130 deg, celsius :-( with alu sump.

I am fitting a 16 row mocal one now.

Anyone else had problems with the Mocal sandwich plate seal onto the block, somehow mine split last year causing a major leak, surprised my engine didn't seize!

What sort of torque does the m22 fitting need to be done upto?

Mine seems to be ok.. had loads of trouble with the crappy mocal fittings leaking though. Needed a LOT of PTFE to seal them!

So if not Mocal, who?

I heard this about the Mocal fittings too, so Miles supplied me just the cooler and sandwhich plate, i got the adapters and hoses made up at Pirtek to my lengths as none of the 'off the shelf' kits were long enough or were too long.

Heres a pic of the modded bumper, and another on the car...

IIRC the mocal fittings are designed to use an O-ring for sealing, rather than deforming the threads.

i have a Mi16, alloy Gti6 sump (hold 6.8ltrs of oil!) with 13 row mocal ane the proper oil stat in the SW plate. It takes a good while to warm up on the motorway at 70mph (4300rpm with my box). Apparently they bleed some oil past the stat. Gving it a real caning though it never moves above the 2nd mark on the std dials. But the Gti6 temp sender works in a different range to the 8v one- it looks cooler than it is.

I got all my bits from Merlin Motorsport and service was first class. also think auto and speed flow are worth a look

I've run a 13 row mocal with a thermostatic take off and a proper SPA gauge, it does run a bit cold under normal cruising conditions which isn't ideal. I blocked it off with cardboard over winter.

Mocal fittings don't have o-rings, they have a tapered seat.

Besides, it was leaking between the flared seat and the outer collar.

I am thinking of going for a 13 row Mocal, which is best, 1/2" or 3/8" pipes?

It is for a XU10J2 2.0 8 valve lump and the car is track focused second car.

i bought a cheap 50 pound 25row oil cooler of ebay, made by gdmheat transfer. its great not a problem, the threads are a little soft but apart from that its great.

ive run 120psi through the 25 row mounted directly to the chassis, no rubber

and 50psi petrol through the 7 row as a fuel cooler.

i ran 1/2" pipes 3/8 is to small!! i dont think you will need a 25row 13 should do.

5/8 the bigger the better imo.
