Hi

Is it possible to remove the crankshaft without removing the gear box(with the engine and box in car).

Thanks

/Martin

no

Clutch is attached to the crankshaft.

Clutch is in the gearbox.

So, no <_<

How is the gearbox "attached to the crankshaft"?

Gearbox bolts to the engine block and the input shaft slots into the crank through the clutch and flywheel.

You could remove the gearbox from the car with the engine in situ, then remove sump, oil pump, rod caps, timing belt, etc, etc to get crank out. Might be easier at that point just to take whole engine out and then you wont have to work under it.

Agree, take the engine out.

I have just rebuilt my engine and was glad that the bottom end was out of the car as i would hate to have put the crankshaft back on my back.

Totally agree, but I don´t have a crane for the engine. I´ll try with the gearbox out an the engine in the car.

Thanks!

As said you will need to get the car on axle stands, remove wishbones from hubs, then remove drivehsafts from gearbox, undo gearbox-block bolts and lower it that way. Useful to have a heavy duty jack to lower the gearbox with. There are still many more bits to take off/out so keep asking if you get stuck.

Why are you taking the crank out?

You can just drop the crank enough to replace the bearings while under the car.

It's a horrible job though.

You can remove and fit an engine without a crane, especially if there are two of you, even with the gearbox attached (easier than taking them out separately)
