Xu Headgasket Modification

Recommended Posts

Guest Rallyesmoker

Hi,

I've got a problem.

After a period of about 3 years and 20.000km of driving (always pedal to the metal <_< ) my headgasket has blown.

Short intro, base is a 105pk engine, 2 liter 86mm crankshaft, 130pk head and 122pk camshaft. Turbo is a TD04-13G of a Impreza. Doing well, at 1,15 bar like 240 HP at the crankshaft. Now, gaskat has blown by 1,4 bar, +/- 260 / 270 HP

Now, I can change the gasket, witch was still an OE fabric one, 1,2mm. New placed. Head studs, are the headbolds, OE fabric ones. But, I was wondering, why the gasket has blown. Was is the fabric gasket, or was it a floating head????

No, I don't know which one of the two reasons has cost me my headgasket, but besides that, what should I do?

I can replace the fabric gasket by a Cometic one IF the gasket was the problem.

But, when it was a floating head, I should use something like stronger headbolds like ARP's. But, they are not for sale for this engine....

Has anyone a usefull solution??? considering what I should do.... ascuming that there is still a bottle of NOS in the back never used....

regards,

Olaf

Best option is to go both routes: a Cometic MLS gasket and some nice ARP studs (both obtainable from DP engineering).

Have contacted them already, waiting for an anwser....

on their website they have only head studs for steel bloks, Hilgert. Those ones are a lot shorter i can remember....

Not much to add, but wow, sounds like a beast! 240 brake must fly - got any pics?

I would have guessed it's the gasket, especially if it's totally bone stock. However getting that sort of power is always going to push stuff, so surely a belt and braces approach is needed here? Admittedly it's a big short term cost, but the peace of mind must be worth it?

Engine internals are all stock ones, but from different type of engines.

RECENT Pictures, well. i do have them on disc, not online. Some older pics out of my diary:

Yeah, one of the few 205 Dimma's driving in Holland.. With this amount of power it's always fun to drive. My goal is 300Hp, more than enough. Never had any gearbox troubles, besides some strange "tik" sound.... changed it and it's gone ;)

Car looks awesome. Where's the air feed for the airbox? Inside the wheel arch?

Yep, i've got an older model gti ('86), which have a new wiper / washer tank, but the old "hole" for the old type of wipertank. That hole has a flexible tube faced under the bumper straigt into the air. Wiper tank is now placed under the paravan / windshield.

Here is a picture how it was without the airbox. Not nice and shiny, but the enginebay of a 205 is crap.... You can see the hole under the filter...

This is a custom manifold. A friend of mine has made this one.

DP-Engineering has a manifold now, so the turbo comes underneath, like a stock 2.0T. In that way, you also clear the mastercilinder.

in seconds thoughts... :D could be wrong....

So,

after recieving the ARP headstuds and cometic gasket I had a wonderfull idea to mount new cilinders and pistons. The new pistons have a custom made hole, to increase some CR. After installing the new pistons, the ARP headstuds and cometic gasket, some enige parts painted blue to match the car. Al put together it now realy is one piece of a kind.

The enige runs great, smoother and seems to have more power. At 0,5bar turbo pressure, it already runs about 180hp... and not even got high rpms. Now i must run the engine for about a 1000km to change the oil and than we can go kick some ass and will it mapped by DP-E. With the old pistons, the CR was a little bit high. Never got any change to get the sparkadvance at the right timing. Nevertheless is ran 240+hp at 1.15bar. I hope i can go over that now. And, still got NOS in the back :)

The airbox is still in place, but not on the picture. The brace above, not on the picture, is also painted blue. Quite happy with the results.

Where did you buy the liners (cylinders as you call them)? And how much were they?
