Gearbox Swap Dilemma !

Recommended Posts

DamirGTI

Right i'm after a recommendation for gearbox choice for tuned 8v engine .

Last few years i have an 405 Sri box bolted on (identical as 1.6 “close ratio” box) and it's been nice so far despite a bit long 4-th and especially 5-th which totally dulls performance (on the long straight road i.e. motorway ..) .

Since the engine is modified (head job , high CR and some other bits and bobs ..) i dunno if it will be better perhaps with lower ratio box such as 1.6 item :) , the engine has loads of torque all over the rev band and it spins right up to the rev limiter far more faster than before when it was standard .

Except this Sri box I also have : BE3 1.9 8v and early BE1 1.6 box .

Now i've never properly driven 1.9 8v engine with std. 1.9 box so I dunno how long it actually is when compared with the 405 Sri box when fitted on the same engine ?! ..

Anyone tried 1.6 box with 1.9 FD ?! :D

Thanks B)

All this would do would make a 1.9 box with shorter first gear, the rest of the gears are the same between 1.9 and 1.6 boxes with the exception of second which I think is 1.88 for 1.6 and 1.85 for 1.9 so very closely matched.

I find standard 1.6 box great fun, and easily bareable on the motorway. it pulls well in every gear including 4 and 5!

Maybe try and find an Mi16 box if you want a real compromise between 1.6 and 1.9

As above, I have a mildly tuned 1.9 which sounds very similar to yours performance wise & I'm running the 1.6 gearbox which is great fun & ideal for any road off the motorway.

Only thing I'm considering is swapping is for a 1.9 first but its not really needed as I have a quaife atb so it takes off well with very little wheel spin in all but the wettest conditions.

Other than that I've got bits for changing to a different box mostly based around a 1.6 GTI one as mentioned in this topic.

I think an Mi16 / S16 gearbox would be to low in first thru third for use on a 1.9 engine.

Graham.

Ok. then i'll try 1.6 box again ;) i had 1.6 box before for a few years but then the engine was std. without any mods , so dunno maybe it could be better now :D

Anyway , i must replace one synchronizer on that 1.6 box first B)

Thanks for info Graham ! B)
