Mega Brain Ache

My friend bought a 1.9 GTI a few weeks ago, it has been layed up for three years, when he got it back after a little fiddling we got it running and it was sweet as a nut,and it was on the old fuel aswell. He hasnt been driving it as he's doing all the bits ready to get it MOT'd,a couple of weeks ago it started running really bad,its got a severe missfire and when you rev it,it will get to 5000rpm max and will missfire and spit flames and loads of black/grey smoke(not blue),when driving it it will get to no more than 3000rpm missfiring and popping.

I went round last weekend thinking it would be something simple,in the end we replaced plugs, leads, cap, rotor arm, coil, ignition module,it had spark but thought something might be breaking down under load,we then replaced injectors, air flow meter,ECU temp sensor, checked cambelt timing as he had done a cambelt, all was ok,its got good fuel pressure, done a compression test 200 psi on cylinders 1 2 & 3 and 180 psi on cylinder 4,its majorly overfuelling and will soak the plugs after running up for 10minuites or so,iv tried adjusting the co screw in the airflow meter,if im overlooking something simple then please let me know,iv suggested to him to try another ecu (which imo i think is a very long shot),and to try using a jump lead to earth the engine incase of a bad earth.

All parts either came from my car or the mega parts warehouse that is Steve@Cornwall,cheers again for that Steve,we will drop the dizzy back to you soon,so im sure they are all in good working order.

Thanks in advance

Only way I've got to the bottom of things like this after swapping components to known good 'uns is to compare readings at ECU between a car that's running right and the faulty one.(took bloody ages to track a broken wire at the AFM on an ebay loom I bought for the CTI - donor car was broken because of "smokey engine.....)

PS - I found my wayward screw on dizzy ----- it was in the boot of the CTi :)

Air leak anywhere? I had a similar problem. It was the screw that bolts black plastic oil filler to the inlet manifold.

If the screw is missing the hole for it causes air to bypass the AFM giving your symptoms.

Hmm.... It could be an air leak, but an air leak is more noticeable on idle and wouldn't cause such a severe misfire as you stated. Are you sure the cam timing is set right? You used the 8mm pins to locate the cam and crank? As you have eliminated just about every possible component, I'd try looking at the cam timing again. I've had before a chewed up woodruff key that locates the cam pulley. This allowed the cam to move round but showed the timing was correct. Another occasion the same happened but on the crank pulley.

Good luck,

Liam.

Cheers for your replies,im pretty certain its not an air leak as this usually causes a high idle and weak mixture due to unmetered air. I did use the correct pins as i have the proper Peugeot locking set,i havnt removed the cam sprocket but when i did the belt i could see the woodruff key in the crank was ok. I will check the cam sprocket when i see him again.

Cheers all

is your coolant temp meter plugged in and working? mine runs oddly without it.

i can't think of it being much else apart from the plug leads being the wrong way round? always worth a double check to be sure!

Checked the leads against mine and there the same, didnt think it could have been them as it was running well before.

Replaced the ECU Coolant temp sensor.

Im gonna try the wiring from the dizzy connector back to the ignition module as a friend said he had the wires melt together inside the loom, dont know if anyone else has had this??

Problem solved, there was a wiring fault to the AFM,repaired the wire and its running, needs setting up now as the timing and co's are well out,but its sounding sweet.

Im trying to get him to join up,he said he tried but were not taking on anymore members, any idea when he could join up?

One of the wires in the connector for the AFM was broken into the back of the connector, stripped the rubber boot and insulation back off the connector and found a broken wire,re soldered a piece of new wire in and hey presto, all fixed.
