Snapped Radiator Outlet

Recommended Posts

Anybody got any tips on how to fix a broken overflow pipe outlet on a radiator, you know, the small one at top-left?

Just been out the sort last niggles on the 205 after fitting a '6 manifold amongst other things, went to nip up this pipe, bit heavy handed and snap........

Options I can think are to glue it back on, although I question the glue's durability with the heat of the coolant, or as I've read on here, use the connector from a fuel pressure regulator and screw that into the rad instead.

Its a brand new radiator and don't really want to bin it.

Help...

I've managed to use a small metal pipe just smaller than the plastic itself in the past as a re-inforcer aswel as some glue to good effect, much like the fpr idea as you say.

I've used an alloy rivet with the pin removed and the top hat bit cut off to strengthen it and some radiator repair adhesive stuff form the local motor factor, 2 part stuff in a yellow box, worked fine and as far as I know is still in use.

That pipe is intended to make it easy to bleed the rad, its called a de-aeration pipe IIRC. I once had this problem and just blocked it off with araldite then capped the hose with a bolt. It makes it harder to bleed the rad but squeezing hoses did the trick, as long as you feel the rad getting warm all over you wont have any problems with that hose disconnected.

Found out that a BX radiator, the smallest of the lot, has the same rad as the 205 gti, but the water outlet on the top (which you all seem to have broken) sits at a 90degree angle to the rad, meaning it doesnt press against the headlight surround when fitted to the car. next time i buy a rad for my 205 ill try the bx rad.

Easy if you have an old inlet manifold lying around - unscrew the vacuum take off for the servo, enlarge the hole in the rad. where the pipe has snapped and the servo take-off will tap itself into the hole with reasonable pressure applied :D

Yeah, only that I binned all my spare inlets ages ago. Made one at work instead from hex bar, with 1/8 npt taper thread. With a bit of PTFE tape should hold. Hoping that I don't have the hassle of removing the entire rad to drill out the hole.

snap went mine today, but the small plastic pipe was held on, just half of it cracked off, so i used resin to seal it. Its still drying now, so hope it seals.
