Advice On Flywheel

Hi guys iam just in process of getting my mi back on road in couple weeks and ever since refitting head ( coincidence i know)

i now have a nasty noise when cranking the starter.I had a mate recon it other week and i checked the teeth on ring gear

and about 3 had little bit of wear but nothing major really, however its still doing it so think it needs another mi16 flywheel. To be honest

ever since i fitted a diesel starter years ago it never sounded as smooth as 8v one.Lastly which is the main point of this thread is

my complete bottom end is lightened and balanced so if i replace flywheel and may aswell change clutch same time, how do Skip Brown

balance these when old ones are balanced with other parts i.e crank, pistons etc.Hope this makes sense feel like iam rambling haha

You normally have everything balanced individually then its all bolted together and balanced as one. You can just do the flywheel and clutch but it wont be balanced with the crank etc, after all people fit lightened and balanced flywheels to standard bottom ends ;)

Have you tried another starter?, is there anything that's in the way of the flywheel/clutch that was moved when refitting the head?.

no nothing in the way just now and again sounds like it aint meshing together obviously when the flywheel stops on

them 3 teeth.Must admit they only have tiny bit of wear on them.Weird as only doin it since the head was put back on.Typical.

Best bet as you say is try another starter.Am i best getting a diesel one again or standard.I have the mi16 flywheel if that makes difference.

A few people use the later XU starters (slimmer than early XU starters) and the diesel on these flywheels and havnt heard any problem like yours.

Just removed the starter and checked ring gear and seems fine.Borrowed a mates mi16 starter and sounds much better

although now and again it was struggling to turn over, compression must be quite high as head been skimmed few times

in last few years.Retarded the dizzy a bit and started easier.Looks like i have to get another starter and get the dizzy right

to much advance and i will end up push starting it haha
