Sump Gasket-again,sorry!

Recommended Posts

Is there any reason why you cant use a gasket on either side of the spacer plate on my 1.9 sump?I've never muchliked the idea of rtv in these type of situations, and have seen just how much silicone the strainer picks up when i've removed the sump on other engines with rtv used as sump gasket!

I'm sure they must use rtv for some good reason, but i just cant see why?

Rule of thumb is

Alloy faces = RTV

Steel > Aloy faces = Gasket

I've also heard this before, but 'why' is what i've often wondered?I'd like to think i could just use gaskets.Has anyone tried this?

Doesn't exactly answer your question....but the trick with RTV is only to use enough to achieve a seal....remember it will compress right down & spread. Other important point is to let it sit for a while before bolting up. Personally have found RTV more reliable than gaskets.

I use Loctite 5699 for these situations and find it very reliable (it's the Honda OE spec). As Lagonda says, only use enough to achieve a seal, it's excess that causes problems, especially when conventional or cheap silicone types are used.

If you start using gaskets then you'll need longer bolt's as well and finding some M7 bolts isn;t the easiest of things to do,

I have found that the Wurth RTV is fine and to date yet to spring a leak but as said use too much and it can get inside the engine or gearbox and block up oil holes.

Sealer only casues problems when its not applied properly. There would have to be a lot of excess for the strainer to become clogged with it !

Sealer is generally more durable than gaskets.

Toyota use hardly any gaskets on their engines for many years. Im not sure on who makes our sealer, but i know its bloody exspensive, we have a few different types, for different uses.
