Can I Reuse Headbolts

i was under the impression that they are stretch bolts so you have to replace them.

Personally I wouldn't, XU's use stretch type headbolts, not sure about TU's though.

 

Swordfish120 on here had a snapped headbolt in his block, cant say if he used new ones or not, although I suspect not, sure he will be along to confirm.

They're inexpensive anyway, replace them as a matter of course.

if you must re-use them check that they are no longer than 176.5mm from tip to the underside of the bolt head.

 

but as mentioned, it's advisable to change them, especially as they're inexpensive.

No i didnt, i stripped the thread in the block, same effect though. I think i paid £11.50 for a head bolt set from APD, doesnt make sense to reuse them.

thanks guys 11.50 cheap then, lol i looked at the euro car parts site and they were asking £18 per bolt!

I reused the headbolts on my XU 1.9. About 2 months later the headgasket went. Turns out theyd streched quite a bit. Epic fail.

The first time i took the head off on mine i replaced the bolts.

 

The head came of another 2 times after that and i re-used the same bolts each time.

 

I had no problems what so ever, i even reused a head gasket one time, just put a bit of sealent on it.

 

Car was thrashed alot and i didn't have any problems over the 6 months using it.

 

Eventually the engine came out ot make way for my 1.9.
