Speedo Drive

Hi guys,

After a gearbox swap I noticed the speedo wasn't working. I took the cable off, jacked up the front end and ran the engine with it in first gear. The speedo drive wasn't turning so I took out the drive completely thinking it was knackered. Which it wasn't. So I ran the engine again in first gear and looked inside the gearbox. The white cog that drives the speedo wasn't turning. I gingerly put my finger on the white cog and it started to turn but only briefly. It then stopped, I can feel it wanting to turn but obviously something inside the gearbox is worn.

Looking underneath to my joy, it looks as though that part of the gearbox that may hold the drive comes off separately. Three bolts hold it on. Has anybody had to replace the same worn part? And does this part of the gearbox come off as easy as I'm hoping? I have another gearbox from a TD so I can rob the bits from that.

Any help will be appreciated greatly.

Liam.

I'm pretty certain I have exactly the same problem on my ZX at the moment, yes the housing does come off after removal of the 3 bolts on a BE gearbox.

Be sure to have a clean pot with a minimum capacity of 2 litres to hand.

There are 3 or 4 different sizes used depending on which vehicle and which tyre size they used, you need to use ones that match the original pairing.

Thanks for the rapid reply Welshpug...

Great that's what I was hoping to hear! Of course it never occured to me that there might be different toothed cogs. I'm sure they can't be too expensive from Peugeot? Any ideas?

The bigger white one drives from the diff. Has a slot in it, which engages the diff iirc.

Then theres a smaller (red?) cog which engages the larger cog and drives the actual cable.

As said, housing does come off seperately. I know the smaller cogs come in a selection of teeth, not sure on the larger cog.

Part number: 2643 04 (19 teeth) for the white worm drive that's in the housing. Very easy but messy to remove.

There is another worm drive which has 22 teeth but I think that is black so shouldn't be easy to confuse.

I have found that the smaller cog has to match the clocks on the car; the most common is the red 17 tooth cog, but I have had to get the white 20 tooth cog before to get the right reading.

Thanks guys this has helped out greatly.

I have a red speedo drive and a white worm drive so it all seems very standard. I'll give Peugeot a bell tomorrow and get it ordered. Thanks Grim.Badger for the part numbers, that should make Peugeot's job a lot easier.
