Gti Automatic To Manual

Recommended Posts

Tom_Fowler

Hi

Does anybody know how much is involved in changing an automatic 205 GTI (not gentry) into a manual. I undeerstand the major part of the work but I was just wondering if anyone knows of if all the mounts, brackets, wiring converts across or if there is an major pitfalls to the conversion.

Thanks Tom

Hi Tom, before anyone else says it, have you tried the search function as I think this has been covered a few times before? As all the details are there to be found.

So do you have one or on the look out for one? Seems a shame to convert what is quite a rare car to one that is quite numerous and easy to locate.

I will check the search.

I reason I am wanting to convert is that I have been looking for a nice rot free manual for a couple of years and travelled miles to see so called mint cars only find them not as described and rotten to the core . Now there is a gti near by in good condition at a good price but its an auto and i want to see if its worth doing?

Tom

Bear in mind, the auto GTI is not a standard 1.9 GTI. It has 105bhp as opposed to 122bhp of the manual ones of that time and the 130 bhp of the pre cat ones.

Double check by looking on your ECU (in the dash above the accelorator pedal in that cubby hole) and see if it is 0 280 000 345 as this will indicate the XU9J1AZ engine.

Its fairly straightforward as long as you have all the bits. You'll need to join a couple of wires so the starter works, as the autos only start in park/neutral. Everything bolts straight on thou.

Off the top of my head you need:

Gearbox

Flywheel

Clutch

Clutch Cable

Clutch Pedal

Brake pedal

Gear stick

Gear surround trim.

Gear linkages

L-shape bracket/pivot bolt

Pivot ball for linkage

Miles

And the reverse cable re-wiring for the manual box but only if you want the reverse light/s
