Guest Wiggs Posted July 22, 2003 I've got two pug's. One's my daily runabout and the other is going to be used (once sorted) on tracks. Although I don't intend to, if I had an accident on the track, my pug possibly wouldn't be driveable home, so I was thinking of getting a trailer to take it to and from events. However I'd need a car to tow this. Can you get a tow bar for a 1.9 GTi? I assume that my 1.9 GTi wouldn't be able to tow a stripped out 1.9 GTi TT on a trailer anyway would it? I'm not sure what it'd all weigh.
Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted July 22, 2003 Not legally as tow weight would be nearly equal to car weight (if not more) but it would probably manage as long as the bodywork didn't break, engine is more than upto it. 405 tow car might be more sensible. Rob
Guest Wiggs Posted July 22, 2003 Thanks Rob. You're always replying to my posts! I guessed as much So I'd be better off with a 405 Mi16 and keeping the engine in it then, that'll be hard to source, I'm guessing that 205 owners have bought up most of them! Guest Zed666 Posted July 22, 2003 there is a toeball fitted to the back of my 205 gti 1.6 shell, so they are available. im sure you would have no problem toeing another gti on a trailer...so long as you arnt ragging the car around, you will be fine...im sure most of the distance is motorway miles anyway. Guest hd_andy Posted July 22, 2003 You can find out for sure on the metal plate that is stamped with the chassis number under the bonnet. It is also supposed to have the GTW number which tells you how much you can tow. If its more than the car its fine.
AndyR 0 Posted July 22, 2003 DO NOT USE YOUR 205 TO TOW SOMETHING ELSE. YOU WILL DIE! The trailers used for carrying other cars weigh approx 500 kilos anyway and on its own would be too much for a 205 to cope with. Combine that with the weight of a 205 as well its just silly. andyc 0 Posted July 22, 2003 It might be un cool but the best tow car I have ever seen is my mate Ollies BX16v it also self levels so it has to be the best option (the BX TZD Turbo held the best tow car for (4 (one of those was after they finished making them!)) years in a row). andyc 0 Posted July 22, 2003 (edited) Also the trailer has a lot to do with it DONT! put a car on an un-braked trailer. I could only just stop a BX estate TD with vented front brakes with an un braked trailer with a Bx16v on it. The BX has better breaks than any car in its class at they are hydraulic off the main suspension system (2000+bar? Ive snapped the rotors before on a BX by breaking to hard). Deadliest Pug 0 Posted July 22, 2003 I'll just repeat what the other guys have said. I was towing around a friends boat for well over a year, total weight of a tonne, twin axle braked trailer and my car struggled in 1 emergency stop. Not just that but towing with a short wheelbase car is asking for trouble, 1 emergency stop will have you on your sde VERY easily. Unless it's a tiny trailer, 205's are just uselessand DANGEROUS at towing. Dave!
Guest ellisg Posted July 22, 2003 Answer is no, I asked the same question and did some research Towing weight for 205 is 800kg, engine can take far far more, but car can't General concensus of towing was that you would have 2 x 205 on roof. The tow ring can't cope either, managed to mangle mine towing another 205 for 5 metres
Deadliest Pug 0 Posted July 22, 2003 That isn't a towing ring, that's a strapdown bracket. I found this out on my 405, it's used when they strap the cars down for shipment etc, NOT FOR TOWING!!!! Crap I know but sadly it's oanother one of the cars quirks. Dave!
Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted July 22, 2003 Just one little additional general not on traliering a car: Never reverse a car onto a trailer, it will try to lift the back of the tow car off the ground and will wag the backend at speed. Rob
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted July 22, 2003 You can reverse a car on a Tralier, Just make sure the engine in the back , Anyway I think I might tow a car the most here and I wouldn't go lower than my 406, used to have a 405 but that struggled up hills, Now it's no problems keeping at 70 odd, opps
Simes 248 2 Cars Posted July 22, 2003 Use a Landy! Just my two cents
Guest alileg69 Posted July 22, 2003 having fitted one to my 1.9 gti to use for a bike rack, i can only agree with above, definately do not tow much weight!! as i said, i use my towbar for a bike rack, with 2 bikes on it you can see the towbar move!! This is due to three out of the 5 anchor points being screwed through the boot floor and as im sure you will have noticed, its not very thick, and wont hold much!!! i feel edgy having two bikes on!!!!!!!!! hope i have helped!! ali
Guest Wiggs Posted July 22, 2003 Thanks for all the replies guys. I guess another car would be the only solution then, I thought it'd be the case. I wasn't sure if you could even get a tow bar for a 205 GTi, although I had seen them on other non-GTi 205's. I'm just looking at the possibilities at the moment, not got my 205 TT track prepared yet. A 406 seems like a realistic vehicle, any advice as to what engine though? A diesel would be preferable. Miles 331 1 Cars Posted July 22, 2003 Noo don't go DERV to slow you wat a V6, more relable too
Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted July 23, 2003 A cheap but VERY good tow car is a Vauxhall Senator, very cheap to buy car. Dad's got an ex-police one (24v 3.0) and we know it will tow a caraven at 80+ no problem (legal in France!) and won many tow car awards in its time. To keep it french though sounds like a BX Mi-16 would be a nice tow car from comments I saw earlier. Rob P.S. Once towed a Jenson Interceptor with a Triumph 2.5PI - we are talking heavier car plus 0.5tonnes of trailer. Acutally did it well but again the Triumph was quite a good tow car, long wheel base + loads of torque.
Simes 248 2 Cars Posted July 23, 2003 Another Cheap tow car would be a BX TurboDiesel - tonnes of torque and cheaper to run,
Guest sillypugger Posted July 23, 2003 i've got a 3.0 V6 605, only cos a hundred quid and tows stuff like it isn't towing anything. surprisingly good mpg as well. variable p/s is great too, and electronic suspension.....the list goes on and on.
Guest ATS Posted July 23, 2003 When i first got my 205 it had a tow bar. So I made full advantage and borrowed a 6*4 trailer and used it to pick up my mi16 engien. As a few of the north west members can vouvh for Only person to turn up at a 205 meet with a trailer on. But on the return journy with the engine in the trailer the car was all over the place with the trailer trying to direct where the car wanted to go. Guest tecw1979 Posted July 29, 2003 i towed my mi16 405 home on an a - frame with a 1.4 astra. mental note to never attampt a 3point turn on a slope and plan the route more wisely!!! 405 is up for graps though... i had the loom, rad, pipes(some not all) and ecu. could b rebuilt... blown gasket but no mayo in it yet.air con, pas,all lectrics. g reg silver. though more usefull to a 205 owner...
