Aftermarket Steering Wheel – Which One?

Recommended Posts

Baz

Yeah i'd try it anyway tbh, for the money it can't be that bad i guess, the suede might wear quicker and it may not be as well made, but for nearly a third the price who cares!

Thanks for the positive comments Andrew and Baz, I was hopping someone might take the 'why not' view. I can get the wheel and boss for £105 delivered. This is compared to c.£200 for a real one. The suede might not last that long. I do have (real) OMP gloves though, which might help it last longer.

I bet the anticipated 2 - 3 week delivery will be quicker than YB and I got an email back from the seller within 12 hours, YB Racing (who sell OMP kit on eBay) never reply to my emails.

I will ponder and report back.

I have been watching those wheels for ages as ive been waiting to find out if a deal I had in the pipe lines would go through (it wont! :D).

I now gotta fork out for a lifeline quick release boss, and a steering wheel... so tempted to go for one of these as its gonna save me quiet a bit.. could even buy 3 for when they wear out!

well Jonny if you buy I'll buy! I like the look of these. But £105 posted? Seems a tad high for that, £45 for the boss?

Good chap, I like the attitude. I have just sent an email to the seller of the cheaper one that Baz found (thanks Baz btw) to see if they do a 205 boss as there is not one listed. Would it be pushing our luck to expect the snap off boss to be any good for £45? I like the idea of a snapp off one.

When I have heard back I will let you know.

You can get a cheaper quick release boss from the likes of merlin motorsport are GPR motorsport, but if you gotta go for one, go for one that is splined WITH a master spline.

I personally have seen a couple of the cheap quick release boss' (HEX ends) have s*ite loads of play e.g. going from 12 to 1 without and steering movement on a westfield track day car!

I personally cannot be assed to compromise on quality for something like that and will be going to lifeline for the simple reason they are very good quality and last for donkeys years.

And about 4 times the price of one that will last longer than a quarter of the time...

They're actually pretty good, i have one. It's the actual 'Snap-Off' ones that you should steer clear of. (Excuse the pun!)

Interesting, the supplier of the wheel does not do a 205 Hub. So, just to confirm, is this okay in you experience Baz? Or is this a better bet? Would either fit staright on okay?

Thanks

Jonny

you do need a boss for using such kind of quick release too. those quick release from fleabay may be cheap in price but the quality is really a serious question. i guess most of them are made in my mother land, so the quality vary a lot and i have seen some look good in photo but extremely bad finishing when you are looking at the real product. better find a proper shop you can trust before spending your money.

Basically, you don't get something for nothing. They will be cheap for a very good reason, the materials are of inferior quality and the tolerances will be greater giving more chance of play.

Personally for a component as important as this I wouldn't be tempted to cheap out! Its worth spending a little bit more and getting something that isn't made from cheese and will be loose as a badger's arse. I'm not saying spunk £160 on a Lifeline boss, but £29 is just too cheap!

Thanks for advice chaps, useful. I can't seem to find a decent boss anywhere except Demon Tweeks, it sounds that a real OMP one is the way to go?

this probaby is one of the most trustworthy bolt-on quick release you can get but the price..... (iirc, SPA and Lifeline also have this design).

Are you looking for just a normal boss or quick release now? Normal boss id just buy any old jobbie, not many difference bar brand names. Quick release as me and cameron have said is something you want to pick very carefully.

I am just after a boss what will work with the fake OMP wheel. A steer would be really useful.

Thanks

That ektor one would probably do then.

Right, I have ordered the fake one, £60 delivered. Time will tell ....

There are two Ektor hubs, 1990 on here and 1987 to 1989 here. Now this has confused me, what happed between 89 and 90? My phase 1.5 is an 89 F, so do I go 87-89 or 90 on?

thanks

Jonny

id go for the one that fits your age group. I dont believe there were actually any differences throughout the years to the splines for the steering wheel anyway.

Well, it got the wheel and the hub in the post today. I have not seen a real OMP wheel but for £80 all in I am quite happy with it and the hub.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and comments, esp Baz who saved me £15 and three weeks wait!

Lifeline snap-off

ektor boss

steering wheel

or do I only need the lifeline snap-off and not the ektor boss too ?
