Aftermarket Steering Wheel – Which One?

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

Do not worry, I am not suggesting I get some hideous ‘the fast and the furious’ Halfords affair.

As my car is becoming quite track focused – stripped, cage, buckets etc and I would like to get a grippier steering wheel.

What are people using, Sparco or OMP wise? Should I go for a deep dish or flay faced? Another query is the material of the rim. Is suede best or will it knacker in five minutes in which case leather is best, right?

Sorry for all the questions, I remember some else asking about this area last year but I can’t find the thread anywhere – I have looked.

Thanks

Jonny

First off, dished and flat faced is all about how you like your driving position.

Suede will wear quiet quick, are you using it for the road as well?

This sound daft but I don't know how I like my wheel, I suspect 'inbetween' is bit of a cop out. I use the car on the road.

I love automotive porn.

id be weary about buying a suede wheel if your using it for the road then, it will wear.

I guess you could see if you could sit in some 205's on here with both dished and flat faced wheels and see how you like each! I for one like to have a steering wheel quiet close to myself, but need to find someone close with a dished wheel to double check!

How do you find the driving position now Jonny? that will tell you if you need any dish etc, and how does the size of the wheel feel too?

I like a wheel a little smaller than std, but not too small as it makes any slow speed manoeuvering a little hard work!

I have a couple spare actually!

Good point Baz, I am quite happy with my wheel as it is, it could come forward a little but not loads. I do not have power steering so I suppose nothing too small. I have ditched the idea of suede, as I will trash it I think. I had a BMW with an M sport steering wheel and joking aside, it had a really good wheel, so the thicker rim the better, the OE one now always feels a bit too thin.

I have a couple spare actually!

Now that Baz, does not surprise me in the slightest. PM me what you have, I will need a boss as well.

I'm also interested in one if you're willing to post it a bit further :). I need a dished one as I'm quite tall and mounted the seat way back and I'm struggling to reach the steering wheel.

a Sparco deep dish 350mm leather is the one I am using. tried my friend's half dish and prefer the deep dish. and my friend, tried my deep dish and he added a spacer to his steering wheel to make it closer to body.

I wouldn't worry about the suede wearing out, you can get them re-covered.

I like the 309 Steering wheel, that's a bit chunkier than a 205 one :)

I recently bought an OMP WRC wheel which is a medium dish. The steering column's also lowered and this combo seems to work fine for me. I wouldn't mind having something with a deeper dish but it'd be even worse to get in and out of the car so i'd end up looking at removable boss kits!

Here's mine:

Is it difficult to lower the steering wheel/column?

the easiest way is to space some washers there. or fabricate your own spacer set.

Baz - whatcha got?

I want a smaller wheel to replace the standard one - the Pug feels like a bus after driving the Caterham, very odd feeling :o

Okay chaps, I have found this on eBay. I can get an OMP Corsica 350 and OMP boss for just over £100 delivered which seems like a good deal. My question is, compared to my existing OE wheel, how closer will the OMP wheel be when fitted? I am fairly happy with the position of my wheel as it is, but then I know no different so may prefer something a little closer to me.

That's not actually an OMP wheel, a copy with an OMP centre, and the boss shouldn't be that much tbh!

Too good to be true then, poo. Has anyone got one of these 'non genuine' wheels?

I quite like that, for £49+p&p its worth giving it a go Jonny, although probably not as strong as a genuine OMP but I expect for what you are intending to use it for it could be a good buy. How much for the boss though?
