8v Conrods To Fit Mi16 Pistons

Recommended Posts

Saveit

Hi There,

Stumbled across these conrods CLICKY and i thought that they may fit mi16 pistons due to the small end being 20mm (scroll down on the page to see specs)? The thing is i would like to build a 1.6 16v xu engine for endurance racing. And to put a 16v head on my car i would need some conrods that will fit, and i thought that these might do?

the 8v and Mi pins are the same size, though a different fit (Mi16 is bushed rod and circlipped in the piston, 8v is an interference fit in the rod and floats in the piston without any clips)

the 8v rod is also too wide to fit inside the Mi16 piston, so you either need the pistons made wider inside, or the small end made narrower.

from the description therr seems to be enough material there to bore them out and fit a bush to make them Mi16 spec, still need them made to fit though.

I have a set of 8V rods that have been bushed to suit the 21mm pin of a Mahle piston. Anything is possible within reason.

must add, brain fade made me think that 8v and Mi pins were 20mm, just remembered its 22mm and checked the rod that's in front of me under my monitor.

so those Wossner rods wouldn't be suitable if they can only go to 21mm.

If you're having custom pistons made (need some pretty big domes to get the CR up) then you coulc spec 20mm pins to save weight.

PeterT are those up for sale? And which 16v pistons are useable with these conrods (link please)?

James i would like to avoid custom made pistons because of the price. I recon i could just skim the head or block to raise CR instead?

there aren't any stock pistons that will give a high enough ratio even if they come flush with the deck, and there isn't a great deal you can remove form the heads.

You could however use off the shelf high compression Mi16 pistons, they'll still be expensive, just not quite as expensive as fully custom ones.

I would imagine Wossner's own pistons would be suitable for use with the Wossner rods

But welsh, you say that the pistons that PeterT has are not useable since they are only 21mm? How come petert says that they are supposed to be used with mi16 pistons? Or is there something i am missing here?

Please note that these are not wossner rods, theсe are some chinese rods, coupled with wossner pistons

They must be stronger than OE rods? Could i somehow couple som OE rods with high compression aftermarket pistons (mi16 type)? Can they be bored out or something? I recon its the small end that doesnt fit the piston pin right?

Maybe i should go the other route and buy aftermarket pistons instead of conrods. Take these pistons for example CLICKY, how much would i have to do to them to fit them to 8v 1.6 conrods? As far as i can tell the only thing i need to do is widen the piston so that the 8v conrod (which is wider at the small end) can sit inside the piston. I wont need to do anything else as the diameter of the small end on both 16v and 8v conrods are 22mm right?

Now how easy is it to assemble a set of pistons and conrods? Do i need any special tool?

Thanks a lot

yes, its about 1.4mm + clearance that needs removing from the conrod or piston when comparing standard pistons, you could get either fully custom pistons made, or get aftermarket Mi16 ones modified.

Ahh welshpug, always up for a quick usefull answer  Thanks a lot. But how about assembly and special tools?

depends if you are using the 8v conrods as they were from the factory, i.e an interference fit gudgeon pin, which entails heating up the conrod whilst cooling the pin down then pressing them together quickly, not really a DIY process, DamirGTi posted up details some time ago

if you are going for aftermarket pistons you could get the 8v conrods bushed and use a smaller 21mm diameter gudgeon pin as PeterT mentioned, then the assembly process would be a lot easier.

Ahh okay. I think ill use aftermarket conrods aswell then. But why is the assembly easier by using a 21mm pin? And who can bush conrods for me?
