Missfiring Whenever It Feels Like It But Getting Worse

Recommended Posts

hope you guys can help after putting in my second mi16 engine after the bottom end went i thought it would be trouble free motoring for a while but apparently not. the problem is the car started missfiring last week when cold then as i drove it, it cleared so i done a little service on it changed the plugs, rotor, dizzy cap and main leads, all was well for a day or so then it started doing it again but now all the time. was having a look at it saturday night and i could see a spark coming from the main lead from the coil jumping to the terminals on top of the coil, to the strut brace anywhere metal really, so i went and got another one but its no different and its getting worse and is barely driveable. im stuck and dont know what to do because quite frankly im rubbish with electrics and i dont fancy riding to work in the rain. its running on standard 1.9 gti loom and dizzy at the moment because eventually it will all be ripped out for throttle bodies and mapable ignition. thanks in advance

Sound like the electrikery is taking the easiest route so I would

Check all your earthing points

Turn the coil so the connections are facing downwards away from the bonnet.

Swap ignition amp for known working good

Hope this can shed some light on your problem

luckily for me my best mate has decided to break his 205 mi16 that i built for him 2 years ago thats ran fine ever since so ive been round tonight and taken his ignition amp, coil, cap, arm and all the leads. im gonna clean up all the earthing points and then fit all his stuff and see what happens.

turns out it was the leads. one of them must have broken down so it was returning the spark back. cheers for your help
