Mi16 'uprated' Headgasket

Recommended Posts

I need some advice regarding choice of headgasket, im wondering if theres anything available thats better than the 'stock' item; mine recently failed between a pot and a waterway...

Liner protusion was bang on upon being built, and it was torqued down properly.. So i'm crossing my fingers that it was purely a crap gasket, i was *fairly* sure i used a Payen headset when i built the engine, but cant find any markings on the gasket to support this so im wondering if it was just a cheapo set.

So, answers on a postcard.. Best headgasket for a stock Mi that sees a lot of track use. :)

Costly fix but an MLS (multi layer steel) head gasket is about the best you'll find imo. (£150+)

Some Peugeot specialists I know will only use oe gaskets from Peugeot so they are sure about the quality.

many O.E gaskets are MLS now, worth checking what you can get off the shelf rather than shelling out silly money.

It sort of depends if the headgasket just "went" or not, if it ran dry and over heated or the fan didnt' kick in then it's not the gasket at fault it's the head warping. similar story if it's run lean and detted the cr*p out the headgasket.

I'd just put a O.E gasket back in and be done with it, I know of a couple of engines running 11.5:1 on a std gasket and not failing

I didn't think MLS and open blocks got on very well either?? not to mention the surface finish required for them to work well.

Heres where it failed..

Im still trying to work out why.. Head is dead flat, block is the same, liner projection was bang on when it was built, and looks to be ok now, i intend to have a closer look tonight to make sure.

How old is it? Its funny for it to go in a waterway if it isn't a very old gasket. Have you been using decent coolant and mixed properly?

I've just had the head off my engine (running 11.4:1) and everything looked just fine. But then it has only covered around 1000 miles.

Id say its approx 18months old? Its done a few trackdays i will admit, and around 3-4k road miles. See, i had a split hose, so im wondering if the hose failed, it lost a bit of coolant and ran hot.. I initially thought the gasket going and pressurising the system burst the hose but now im not so sure.
