Mi16 Cooling System Bypass Rail...

Recommended Posts

Stu

What is it for? I guess a bypass to help the heater warm up a little quicker? I remember some peeps saying they'd done away with it, so i figure you TIG up the outlet on the stat housing, but what do you do with the other bit on the distribution block? Does another one fit without the extra outlet?

Has anyone experienced any problems in doing away with this?

It's good for the round file!!! yeah just remove it and block off ends. It's there to give a radiator bypass and speed up the engine getting up to temp, I think petert did a thread on removing it and switchign thermostats a while back.

You don't need to TIG up the extra outlet, you can buy a purpose built blank for this job from peugeot.(1210.03)

I'm with Tigging as it will never fail (In theory) and the rear water Dist housing can be swaped for any 8v one, Easy as that.

Most 16v Housing's have the wrong stat fitted anyway so don;t work as they should

Heat the thermostat up with an oxy torch and the pipe will slide out. Then run a 1/2" BSP tap down the hole and screw in a blanking plug. I use the 8V inlet like Miles said.

Having tried to TIG weld the stat housing before I would now tap it as Petert says and screw a plug in to block it off. Cast aluminium is not nice to weld to begin with, then add 20 years of soaked in oil and grime and it makes it just plain horrible to get a nice weld.

Ok.. So ive got the pipe out, and the old mans got it at work to tap and plug it.

So, i gather i now need an 8V distribution block?

Also, i want to do away with the Mi thermostat housing as its got the take off to feed the oil cooler, i now run a proper cooler so this is redundant, is the 8V stat housing the one to use? does it fit ok? just wondering if theres a particular one to avoid etc.

Thanks for the advice so far guys! ;)

For the back of the engine block yes.

Yes, 8v stat cap & top hose is a stright swap but if the oil / water heat exchanger is still plumbed in there are a couple extra hoses to remove & the exchanger matrix under the oil filter.

This is what I did with mine, just mig some plate on the end. 8v block on the back (which is also ally and less prone to leaking). I used the 8v stat housing take off but had problems with it leaking, I made a gasket out if rubber but understand there should be two rubber seals that go either side of the stat.
