Oil Pressure Dropping Off After Track

Recommended Posts

Not sure what I can do about this or if I need to worry but my oil pressure drops low enough to trigger the stop light after a track session.

It doesn’t come on when I am on track as the revs are up, it’s when I am driving back through the pits or leave it at idle.

Under normal road conditions when starting from cold it indicates just under the 4 notch. Once warm and revved it’s pretty solid at 4, returning to just over the 2nd at idle.

The oil (15w40) and filter (genuine pug) was fresh, no blue smoke or particularly worrying rattles. The water temp doesn’t get excessively high.

Should I try and get some more air to the cooler?

sounds like the usual symptoms of hot thin oil and a fairly tired engine, worth noting that it's not a good idea to rely on the factory guessometer, get a proper gauge fitted if you're worried about it, if only to diagnose whether the pressure is low at all.

should imagine if its the standard 1.9 oil cooler that they get enough air, especially if the blanking plate on the grille under the bumper is removed.

You could try moving to a 15/50 oil, this will give slightly better pressure when hot. However as long as you have good oil pressure when revving this is the most important thing.

Cheers chaps.

The blanking plate has been removed, it is a standard 1900 oil/air cooler.

Never noticed the light whilst on track and I do try and keep an eye on it.

Will try 15/50 next time then.

In that situation would I be best off switching the engine off whilst hot or letting it run with the fan on (switchable) until it cools down?
