Clutch Pedal Travel

Recommended Posts

ajones12

I have a problem previously discussed before - gear selection ok when engine not running, but crunches when running. I bought this car as a £100 project and don't really know too much history.

Before I look at the gearbox, what is the clutch pedal travel supposed to be? Is this the best way to check clutch adjustment??

Gearbox is a be1 - reverse to the left of first.

Thanks for your help.

Try loosening and tightening the clutch cable to start with. If thats no good the its a gearbox off job i'm afraid.

Another thing to check is to see if all the bolts are in the gearbox holding it to the engine,i have seen some with a couple of bolts missing.

The clutch pedal should sit slightly higher than the brake pedal.

Iirc the BE1 box occassionally has problems with the clutch arm bending/cracking so worth checking that and of course the gearbox bolt (there are 4) before taking the box off.

Pedal travel for XU engines in a 205 should be 200mm, for other engines it should be 180mm :)

Thanks for the information all. I'll check the travel and pedal position. Presumably the 1.9 is a XU engine???

Hopefully it won't be a gearbox off........

Is it really that much in a 205? Think 405 is only 145mm according to Haynes.

common failure on the be1 box is the metal "L" bracket that pushes the pin into the clutch release arm. firstly, check the "L" bracket hasnt bent, secondly check the pin is still there :)
